2015 ARWU Ranks NSYSU World Top 500 Universities

According to 2015 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) released by Shanghai Jiao Tung University, National Sun Yat-sen University is ranked as the world’s 447th best research university, and 7th among Taiwan's national universities. Other fields NSYSU ranked in the top 200 are Mathematics: 76th (1st in Taiwan), Engineering: 101th, and Computer science: 151th.

The ranking criteria and weighs Shanghai Jiao Tung University uses to conduct ARWU are Quality of Education (10%); Quality of Faculty (40%); Research Output (40%); and Per Capita Performance (10%); the definition of indicators includes the total number of alumni winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; the total number of staff winning Nobel Prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Medicine and Economics and Fields Medal in Mathematics; the number of papers published in Nature and Science; the total number of papers indexed in Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Science Citation Index; and the number of Highly Cited Researchers selected by Thomson Reuters. NSYSU received high HiCi score, and has three researchers identified on the Thomson Reuters list – Professor Kin-Lu Wong of EE Department, Professor Wataru Takahashi of the Department of Applied Mathematics, and Professor Hong-Kun Xu of the Department of Applied Mathematics.

ARWU is the first and one of the most widely observed university rankings, published annually since 2003. It is highly regarded for its objective methodology, transparency and consistency. It surveys 1,200 universities around the globe and releases the ranking of the top 500. The other two major academic ranking systems are Times Higher Education World University Rankings and QS World University Rankings.
