NSYSU has recently established the Southern Taiwan Global Research and Industry Alliance with other 5 local universities, under the promotion of the Ministry of Science and Technology Global Research & Industry Alliance Project (GLORIA). Being the first in Taiwan to contract with Oxentia-Oxford’s Global Innovation Consultancy – an OUI (Oxford University Innovation, OUI) innovative spin-off company, the six-university-alliance will endeavor to connect academia research intimately with industrial needs. By learning the successful experience from international top university derivative companies, the alliance hopes to solve industrial problems, cultivate talents, advance the research commercialization, and create an international platform.

NSYSU President Ying-Yao Cheng emphasized that the Southern Taiwan Global Research and Industry Alliance is the first in Taiwan to receive the know-how authorized by Oxentia. Currently, the alliance is focusing on areas of clinical innovation, smart aids, and PM2.5 aerosol research, bringing industry-academia innovation, entrepreneurial energy and research results to the international market as well as providing new solutions for medical technology.

President Cheng further points out that the Southern Taiwan Global Research and Industry Alliance not only recruited the former Sales Vice President, Richard S. N. Chang, of an innovative medical technology company of the Silicon Valley as the CEO, but also is the only transdisciplinary platform that engaged alliance from 6 universities. The managers from each school are already stationed in the Industrial Liaison Office (ILO) on the sixth floor of NSYSU’s International Research Building. The office is all set and operating currently to become the service window for integrating the research energy of the 6 schools and establishing connections to the industry and the international market.

CEO Richard S.N. Chang stated that innovation and transdisciplinary collaboration is the vital key to future international competitiveness. In the future, the ILO will combine the marketing experience of the industry with the technology innovation of the six universities in Southern Taiwan into valuable intellectual properties. In addition, the ILO will actively recruit members from domestic and international enterprises to join the industrial liaison, facilitating the link of international industry-academia resources and enhancing competitiveness.

CEO Richard S.N. Chang also mentioned that the Taiwan academia has many hidden gems, researchers with outstanding research potentials. To facilitate and disperse the research findings, the ILO will further extend its reach and establish tight connections with international enterprises. Besides, with reference to Oxentia’s global innovative entrepreneur resources, the ILO will gradually construct an international innovative entrepreneur ecosystem, which will help making Taiwan's R&D energy gain international favor.

The Southern Taiwan Global Research and Industry Alliance consists of National Sun Yat-sen University, Kaohsiung Medical University, National University of Kaohsiung, National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (Formerly National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology and National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences) and National Pingtung Technology University.
