Studying at a school set beside the beach, members of student clubs from NSYSU are deeply motivated by a sense of mission to save the ocean. NSYSU Tzu Chi Collegiate Association gathered students to show their respect for the ocean by organizing a beach cleanup, with the event attracting more than 100 students from seven schools in Greater Kaohsiung to join. “The amazing scene of Cijin Secret Beach starkly contrasts with the trash on beach,” said the organizer. “We hope the participants recognize the importance of environmental protection through actual engagement and that we get more people to join events like this.”

In March, three pygmy killer whales died in waters near the Port of Kaohsiung after accidently consuming plastic bags and stranding on the beach nearby. If the public had used less plastic bags, wild animals would be less likely to consume plastic products by mistake. The goal of this beach cleanup was to put a stop to tragedies such as a straw ending up in a turtle’s nostril and plastic bags filling up a young whale’s stomach.

Bai-yi Tsai, a sophomore from NSYSU Department of Information Management, was the coordinator of the beach cleanup co-organized by seven schools. Tsai added that they had designed some games to create emotional resonance. Through these games, the participants recognized why beach cleanups are necessary and understood what they should do next. By promoting the idea of beach cleanups, the event also raised public awareness of environmental protection.
