Assisting the NSP, NSYSU Built Hi-Ed Platform of Mandarin for Taiwan and India

Appointed by Education Division Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in India, the Chinese Language Center, NSYSU has hosted a two-week research event concerning Mandarin Learning and Teaching this summer. Fifteen Mandarin teachers from renowned India universities attended. Dr. Chih-Wen Kuo, Director of CLC/OIA emphasizing that the event focused on teaching strategies in Phonetics, Syntax, and Characters as well as newly developed Digi-Sci application and multiactivity in promoting learning motivation. The program also includes visiting Kaohsiung harbor, firsthand experience of Sci-Tech and culture in hopes of ‘Through the interchange of Mandarin teaching and learning, academic research achievement could further extend to more New Southbound Nations.’

Dr. Chih-Wen Kuo also pointed out that the government’s New Southbound Policy has attracted many India students studying in Taiwan. The chief editor of the Education Times of Times of India, while visiting Taiwan, has also indicated that due to the excellent research achievement and been the most patent rights acquired in the world, Taiwan will be the first choice for advance study by India graduates. And the number of India students whom wish to study in Taiwan shall reaching a hundred thousand in the next few years hopefully. Accordingly, the Mandarin study in India promoted by MOE Taiwan has been strongly implemented in recent years. In addition to the already established Taiwan Education Center in seven India Universities which offering excellent Mandarin courses, a special program in promoting Taiwan teachers teaching Mandarin in India has been put into practice since October 2018. The program specifically removes the four-year teaching restrain in hopes of gaining mutual academic cooperation, respecting the cultural divergence and creating a win-win situation between the two countries.

As Professor Rakesh Kumar from the Jawaharlal Nehru University pointed out that this years’ program not only providing teachers an opportunity and platform to interact with local faculties but also broadening their horizons in area of teaching and learning. Professor Geeta Kochhar also indicated that Mandarin teachers are very much in need in India recently, especially for those who are capable of professional knowledge in syntax and fully understand the cultural differences. He looks forward to have a mutual cooperation in area of editing practical textbooks and an advanced study opportunity in teaching method, translation and research in Taiwan as well.

In promoting a high-quality Mandarin teaching and learning environment, the CLC, NSYSU spare no efforts. Since 2011, the center has hosted many Mandarin teachers from varies countries, and favorable reviews have gained since then. In this summer’s event, the India teachers, apart from the regular classroom interact, had a chance to visit Kaohsiung city, experiencing the MRT, the around-the-harbor boat, and the ferryboat rides in spare time. The teachers also visited ‘The Highest Institute’—the Confucius Temple, historical monuments in Tainan and have a real taste of classic and delicious Taiwanese cuisines. While enjoying the unique and precious traditional Hakka art craft culture, teachers also attended the Indigo Dyeing Workshop in Meinung. The exotic experiences of southern Taiwan cities made all the India guests an unforgeable memory this summer.
