On October 2nd NSYSU College of Social Sciences signed a memorandum of understanding on student exchange program with the Faculty of Social Sciences, Waseda University, a renowned institution in Japan. The Chairman of the College of Social Sciences Chyi-Lu Jang signed a memorandum with the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Jie Liu, in the presence of NSYSU President Ying-Yao Cheng. It is another of the documents promoting cooperation between Taiwan and Japan in higher education.

Internationalization is a focal point for the development of NSYSU. University President Ying-Yao Cheng, Chairman Chyi-Lu Jang and Dean Jie Liu discussed ways of strengthening bilateral cooperation: academic exchange between teachers of both universities, collaborative research, and establishment of a dual-degree program for undergraduate students. NSYSU strives to become the second university in Taiwan, after National Taiwan University, to conduct an undergraduate dual-degree program with Waseda University, hoping to strengthen the academic ties between Taiwan and Japan and together cultivate top talents in the field of social sciences for continuous, long-term mutual benefit.

“Waseda University is a top private university in Japan, and is rated among the 200 top universities in the world. Having a collaboration agreement with Waseda University is a great recognition to NSYSU”, said Chairman Chyi-Lu Jang. The agenda of the visits to Japan in the first half of this year included several visits to Waseda University, Keio University and Saitama University of the professors of the College of Social Sciences. Among these universities, the organization and policies of the Faculty of Social Sciences of Waseda University are the most corresponding to the College of Social Sciences at National Sun Yat-sen University. The professors found out that a second language is one of the requirements to graduate from the Faculty of Social Sciences, and that one fourth of the students chose to study Mandarin. Thus, the specialist courses at the College of Social Sciences and Mandarin courses at the Chinese Language Center can both be attractive to the students of Waseda University.

Chairman Chyi-Lu Jang said, that in the beginning of the academic year 2018-2019, the University President Ying-Yao Cheng announced a new monthly stipend of NTD 10,000 (for the period of 12 months) for undergraduate students going to an overseas university for exchange to even more encourage students to study abroad and broaden their horizons.
