Innovative technology and prospective trends at 2019 Taiwan Academic Network Conference organized by NSYSU

September 25th was the first of three days of Taiwan Academic Network Conference 2019 (TANET 2019), organized by National Sun Yat-sen University at International Convention Center Kaohsiung. The conference focuses on five main topics: novel communication technology for Internet of Things, new smart living, novel cloud services, new ways to improve information security, and novel software applications; with extension to 55 fields, including 5G network, AI and its applications, prospective research and development of information security, Internet network planning, Internet of Things, in-depth learning, network technology, blockchain and software engineering. New Internet-related knowledge and technologies were shared.

NSYSU President Ying-Yao Cheng pointed out that these topics reflect the newest trends in information technology, particularly those related to 5G, Internet of Things, AI and big data. Information technology integration once again ended in a huge flow of information, turning the economy and peoples' lives upside down in all aspects: telecommunications, manufacture, transportation, accommodation, shopping, education, and entertainment. Information security has been an issue of concern to the Ministry of Education in recent years; NSYSU is also investing its resources in this field. Big data, Internet of Things, AI technology have recently made their appearance. Besides law regulations, new protection systems and technology have to keep up with the times. This time, the Conference is collaborating with the National Center for High-Performance Computing of National Applied Research Laboratories to promote Cyber Defense Exercise – a course allowing the participants to play the roles of a hacker and of an information security engineer by simulating website hacking and defending, and then discussing the attack and defense of the incident.

Wei-Kuang Lai – Professor at the NSYSU Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Vice President of the Office of Library and Information Services said that this year’s conference instituted a new competition – English-Language Presentation Contest. Besides Outstanding Paper Award and Best Paper Award, new award categories were added: Best English Presentation Award and Outstanding English Presentation Award, providing paper submitters with new opportunities and enriching the Conference.

This year’s edition also presented the achievements of the portal on information engineering and intellectual property of the Ministry of Science and Technology. This year, 227 papers in total and 51 oral dissertations and posters were presented and 7 science and technology workshops were organized. Bor-Chen Kuo, PhD – Director of the Department of Information and Technology Education, Ministry of Education; prof. Yu-Chee Tseng, National Chiao-Tung University; prof. Jyh-Shing Roger Jang, Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, National Taiwan University; Chun-Jung Su – Deputy Minister of the Directorate-General of Personnel Administration, Executive Yuan, and prof. San-Yih Hwang – Dean of the College of Management at NSYSU gave keynote speeches. Seven top scholars of the main fields of information security conducted a discussion on smart learning campus and AI machine learning.

2019 Taiwan Academic Network Conference, led by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science and Technology, and organized by National Sun Yat-sen University, is the most important Internet and IT-related event for the Taiwanese academia. NSYSU also organized trips for the guests to discover the ecosystem of Chaishan, the history of Hamasen and the marine environment of Sizihwan, presenting famous spots of Kaohsiung, its natural and historical treasures. The Conference is a journey through new technological developments, academic and practical, stimulating creativity, and spreading new knowledge in the smart era, using different forms of communication.
