Ryu Goto joins Baroque Camerata to perform Vivaldi’s Four Seasons

Japanese virtuoso violinist Ryu Goto combines Eastern modesty with Western passion and freedom. He holds a black belt in karate and a Bachelor degree in Physics from Harvard University. On November 6th and 9th, he will perform in National Concert Hall and in the Chih-Te Hall of Kaohsiung Cultural Center respectively. It will be the first joint performance of Ryu Goto with the University’s resident orchestra – Baroque Camerata. In “The Beauty of Sublime” (concert title), Goto will play Jupiter, ex-Goding – Stradivarius’ violin constructed in 1722, which sound will be accompanied by a replica of 18-century French-style double harpsichord of Baroque Camerata to perform Vivaldi’s Four Seasons from the Baroque period.

Ruy Goto is the younger brother of Midori Goto, one of top three female violinists. As a 13-year-old, he gave a series of 10 concerts in Casals Hall in Tokyo; the tickets were sold out in a very short time, breaking a new record in the history of classical music circles in Japan. At 17, in collaboration with Deutsche Grammophon, he published “Ryu Goto Violin Recital”, a record that became the best-seller of the year in the ranking of Japanese classical music records. At 19, after graduating from Trinity College and Juilliard School, he was admitted to the Department of Physics at Harvard University. Besides violin, Goto’s hobbies include karate. He holds a 3rd degree black belt. He started practicing karate at 7 with his grandfather, and at only 10 years old, he earned a black belt, breaking the stereotype about musicians being delicate. He is a versatile talent and a violin virtuoso.

Ryu Goto is often invited to play with renowned orchestras around the world and collaborate with famous musicians. In the past, he played with: London Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra (Washington D.C., USA), Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, European Union Youth Orchestra, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and Taipei Symphony Orchestra. Artistic director of Baroque Camerata and professor at the Department of Music at NSYSU Mei-Wen Lee said that Ryu Goto is a skillful performer brimming with talent and his multiple abilities. The candid and bright sound of his violin makes music fans look forward to hear Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, a melody known to everybody, performed by Goto. This grand feast of classical music offers music lovers the best-known melodies of the Baroque period.

For the past many years, NSYSU resident orchestra – Baroque Camerata, got the opportunity to work with highly-reputed musicians; in 2017, it played with violin virtuoso Olivier Charlier from France, in 2018, with Yu-Chien Tseng, winner of the 2nd prize at the XV International Tchaikovsky Competition in the category of violin. In 2019, Baroque Camerata invited Ryu Goto – violin virtuoso of Japan, to play together in the biggest performance of the year. To play with an international star is an important moment for Baroque Camerata, which aims to steadily internationalize and gain a position on the world stage. Inviting international musicians to perform together is a way to build up international network. By exchanging culture and arts, a platform can be established for the dialogue between Taiwan and the world with music as mediator.
