Foreign students from 12 countries compete singing in Chinese

On November 1st, 2019, Chinese Language Center at NSYSU organized the 21st Singing Contest in Chinese/Taiwanese for Foreign Students in the Kwang-Chung Hall in the International Building. Students from 12 countries competed for awards in three categories: solo, duo and group performances, singing Mandarin-language classics and most recent Taiwanese hits. This year, the contestants made the decision of the jury very difficult with their excellent performances!

One of the highlights of the contest were two students from the Philippines rocking the stage with one of the greatest hits this year in Taiwan – “What’s Wrong” by Eric Chou. Jana and Justin sang out their true emotions – we were not surprised to learn that they were both heart-broken. They had practiced for two weeks and today’s performance was the first time when they finally sang it clean! It was no surprise that they won the first prize in the duo category.

Another of the surprises this evening was the winner of the third award for soloists – Anna from Russia. After hearing her electrifying performance of G.E.M.’s hit “Goodbye”, and her perfect Mandarin pronunciation, nobody would suspect she cannot speak Chinese! In her free time, she likes to learn songs in different languages.

Anna’s example proves that listening is crucial to learn a language, and so thinks Marta – a Polish scholarship student who came to study at Chinese Language Center. She admitted that she learned a lot watching videos and dramas in Chinese. It was her first time to speak Chinese on stage, as she took on the role of the contest host.

After the contestants’ performances, the Center prepared a dance activity for the audience. About a hundred people went down to the stage to learn the funny moves of the shark dance from the Center’s teachers who today took on the role of dance instructors!

This year, among the participants, there were not only NSYSU students, but also foreign students of other universities in Kaohsiung and Pingtung. The Contest is a perfect occasion for them to practice what they have learned and is an incentive to get to know Taiwanese culture and music.
