National Sun Yat-sen University was recognized for its efforts in supporting international students. The Office of International Affairs (OIA) is responsible for the internationalization of the University and providing counselling and support for international students. OIA helps international students to quickly adapt to the local learning environment and provides guidance and care in campus life. This year, NSYSU has the rare honor of receiving the 2019 Award of University of Excellence in International Student Support by the Ministry of Education for the third time.

This academic year, besides NSYSU, only three other universities were granted the Award. NSYSU obtained this award for the third time, after having received it in 2010 and 2016. What is more, in the past, Ms. Hui-Ching Yap of the OIA had received the Award in staff category three times for her dedication to overseas Taiwanese student service. Director-General of the Department of International and Cross-strait Education of the Ministry of Education Mr. Tsu-An Pi recognized and thanked the University staff for their efforts and perseverance. With the number of international students growing, the Ministry of Education will continually support universities in providing guidance for foreign students.

The Office of International Affairs has established a well-rounded service network for international students, which includes the establishment of an online system with information on registration, a real-time response system, counseling service, student buddy program, home stay program, free Chinese language classes, and language exchange program. To encourage engagement in local festivities, OIA supports NSYSU International Dragon Boat Team in their participation in dragon boat competitions every year; the Team has won for 11 consecutive times. NSYSU also offers scholarships for outstanding students, so that the students can focus on studying without worrying about their finances.
