To respond to the government’s New Southbound Policy and strengthen Taiwan’s bilateral academic exchange with Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Macao, National Sun Yat-sen University signed strategic alliance agreements with NLSI Lui Kwok Pat Fong College in Hong Kong, Foon Yew High School, Foon Yew High School – Kulai, Pay Fong Middle School Malacca and Kluang Chong Hwa High School in Malaysia. In the future, the University hopes to exchange visits, establish short-term courses or workshops and related educational guidance events for students and teachers of the collaborating overseas high schools to get to know the special features and strong suits of NSYSU and for the outstanding students to get enrolled in the University by the school’s individual recruitment channel by recommendation.

NSYSU actively expands its international cooperation, joining Taiwan Higher Education Fair in Malaysia in April this year (2019) and visiting Hong Kong in May. Moreover, Vice President for Academic Affairs Tsung-Lin Lee led the team of the Recruitment Strategic Development Office of the Office of Academic Affairs to visit Malaysia, Hong Kong and Macao in September. Besides visiting local schools and alumni associations of Taiwan universities, the team also promoted school’s individual recruitment channel to overseas Chinese. This helped establish a foundation for continuous cooperation and create a friendly platform for future students coming to Taiwan to study. This time, the team also joined Taiwan Higher Education Fair in Macao presenting NSYSU, its academic system and admission channels to the participating students, parents and teachers. According to the data collected via survey, the students participating in the fair expressed an interest for NSYSU departments and institutes, and as much as 84.3% would choose to study at the University, and over 91.4% of respondents gave NSYSU an overall impression score of 4 or above on a scale of 1 to 5. By promoting the University during local education fair, the Office of Academic Affairs hopes to attract more outstanding students from Macao to choose to study at NSYSU.

The team promoted the school’s individual recruitment channel for overseas Chinese during their visit to Chinese High School Batu Pahat, Chong Hwa High School S.B.R. and Pei Chun High School in Malaysia. Besides providing information on the features of the university system and guidance for overseas Chinese students, such extracurricular activities like events and societies for overseas Chinese have left a long-lasting impression on the students and teachers of Chong Hwa High School S.B.R. To further promote Taiwanese education among overseas Chinese, NSYSU team paid special visits to the representatives of two associations: Persatuan Bekas Penuntut Taiwan, Johor Bahru and Persatuan Alumni Taiwan, Selangor Dan Wilayah Persekutuan. During the meetings, representatives of both associations shared information on the present situation and difficulties encountered by Malaysian students overseas and gave some suggestions on recruitment strategies for Taiwanese universities recruiting Malaysian students.

The most popular fields of study among Malaysian students coming to Taiwan to study are business and management. Head of Sun Yat-sen University Taiwan Alumni Association of Malaysia Kelvin Pang, an outstanding alumnus, the Deputy Head Toh Ying Song and other alumni from different parts of Malaysia enthusiastically supported the promotion for NSYSU in their country, hoping to increase the visibility of NSYSU, make it locally recognizable and invite more students to enroll and have the opportunity to grow at the University.

Overseas Chinese students (including from Hong Kong and Macao) will be able to be admitted to NSYSU by recommendation of their schools since 2020. The selection result for admitted applicants was announced in October 2019 and applications for the next individual recruitment session will be accepted between March and June next year. We invite more outstanding overseas Chinese students to join NSYSU!
