Students travel in south Taiwan to learn how to promote social innovation and achieve SDGs

Si Wan College organized the 2020 Social Innovation in Taiwan Summer Program to let young talents learn how to promote social innovation and achieve UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). During the three-day English program, led by assistant professors Koching Chao and Chiahao Hsu, 30 students from 8 countries visited several historical and cultural sites and companies in southern Taiwan to learn about regional revitalization, and sustainability and innovation in a business.

The participants visited such historical buildings as Anping Tree House and Hayashi Department Store to learn about the historical development in Taiwan and understand how the government and the residents revitalized the historical and cultural heritage by working together. In the wetlands environment of Taijiang National Park, the students saw how harmony between the industrial landscape and ecosystem conservation can be achieved. Visiting the Chimei Museum and Chimei Happiness Factory, they could experience how to nurture people’s sense of aesthetics, promote the culinary culture of Taiwan, and at the same time, achieve a business model that combines cultural innovation and profit.

The students visited two core enterprises, representative of the Taiwanese economy: Sun Lung Gear Works – a producer of gearboxes and PATTA Group – a producer of rivets and screws. Both companies were started from scratch by entrepreneurs who strived for their development and innovation and succeeded in marketing their products overseas and filling a niche in the global market. Chairman Steve Liao of Sun Lung Gear Works and Manager Liu of PATTA Group took the students on guided visits around the factories, introduced their products to the students, and discussed the evolution, operation, marketing strategy, and values of their companies. Many participants, both Taiwanese and international, said that they had not heard about the two companies before and that the visit let them learn about the strengths and competitiveness of the core enterprises in Taiwan. They actively participated in the Q&A session and were very curious about both companies’ operation, marketing, expansion to overseas markets, employment of international talents, and CSR.

The participating students from 8 countries: Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Russia, Spain, Israel, and Turkey, divided into mixed groups, engaged in everyday discussions, and related the information gathered during the visits to the SDGs. The Program fostered cross-cultural communication and contributed to the promotion of internationalization at Si Wan College.
