NSYSU first in Taiwan to establish self-directed learning program for high school students

2021-05-10

If you are a high school student, you are probably racking your brains on how to write a self-study plan. Professors from NSYSU can help! Starting from the second semester of the academic year 2020-2021, National Sun Yat-sen University has set a national precedent by establishing the Guiding the Future Stars of Sizihwan: Self-Directed Learning Incubator Program for high school students to help them with self-studying – a core element of the 12-Year Basic Education Curriculum.

The 12-Year Basic Education Curriculum has been launched for over one year. According to a sampling survey conducted by domestic educational media, more than half of first-year high school students claim that the greatest difficulty in planning self-directed learning is the uncertainty of the goals to achieve, followed by the puzzlement about what they actually want to study in the future. What is more, there are also differences between respondents from urban and rural areas. NSYSU Vice President for Academic Affairs Po-Chiao Lin said that Guiding the Future Stars of Sizihwan: Self-Directed Learning Incubator Program is not only a program that can complement high school education by providing professional resources for the students to stay motivated and be better oriented but also to inspire them to learn more by themselves and get support from the University. All high school students are welcome to apply.

Director of Recruitment Strategic Office Wen Cheng said that self-directed learning is an important way to explore oneself and one’s interests although it provides them with no credits. NSYSU’s professors personally advise high school students on their self-directed learning plans, helping them to clarify their learning goals and try to provide the best feedback basing on their own research expertise.

Associate Professor Shen-Horn Yen of the Department of Biological Sciences and Associate Professor Chun-Hua Tang of the Department of Finance at NSYSU have been observing self-directed learning plans proposed by high school students for a long time, and issued “prescriptions” – letters with concrete recommendations. Tang believes that students may not have a clear idea about the difficulty of the content to study and potential difficulties when drawing up self-directed learning plans and this may cause them to fail to catch up with the changes or even to be frustrated. The professors can use their experience to help students weigh their abilities and act accordingly.

Professor Yen mentioned that the self-directed learning program for high schoolers should be inspiring students’ motivation and planning abilities for them to learn anything they want. There are some practical problems to solve in self-directed learning, such as hitting the wall after half a semester, one’s mind going blank, being unable to find logic in one’s study plan or to develop a feasible plan. Such problems can bring students a great deal of anxiety. “It's great when a self-directed learning plan goes smoothly and produces expected results, but if you fail, the experience is actually more valuable if you can explain the reasons for the failure and come up with improvement ideas and even put them into practice,” he said.
