NSYSU cultivates biological talents and wins 3 gold and 1 silver medals in International Biology Olympiad

(Provided by Department of Biological Sciences) The 33rd International Biology Olympiad (IBO) has been held in Armenia in 2022. The Department of Biological Sciences of National Sun Yat-Sen University was entrusted by the Ministry of Education to select and train the IBO contestants. Among 238 participants from 62 countries this year, they won a total of 3 gold and 1 silver medals, ranking Taiwan the third place in the competition.
A total of 20 professors including Professor Jiin-Tsuey Cheng from the Department of Biological Sciences of NSYSU formed the Taiwan Chinese Taipei Biology Olympiad Committee, which was responsible for the selection and training of the Taiwanese Team contestants. The selection process to determine the team members was split into four separate stages, namely preliminary selections, semi-finals, training camps and finals. Among the 3,909 participating high school students this year, 4 students with the best results were ultimately selected to represent Taiwan. The Taiwanese team performed strongly well this year. The gold medal winners of the team were Yu-Chen Huang, senior of Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School, senior Chen-An Liu and sophomore Liang-Shin Huang from National Chiayi Senior High School, and the silver medal winner was Kai-Jie Hu, senior of Taichung Municipal Taichung First Senior High School.
The Department of Biological Sciences of NSYSU has participated in the IBO training for many years. The implementation of the competition plan requires a lot of human and material resources, from question drafting of preliminaries, semi-finals, training camps and the finals, to the training after the selection of the representative team members, many participants have contributed silently. For example, Professor Jiin-Tsuey Cheng of the Department of Biological Sciences specializes in genetics and molecular biology, Professor Yu-Chung Chiang in plant evolution and bioinformatics, Associate Professor Shen-Horn Yen in ecological evolution and entomology, Associate Professor Jau-Cheng Liou in animal neurophysiology, Assistant Professor Chia-Hao Chang-Yang in plant ecology, Assistant Professor Yun-An Chen in plant physiology, Assistant Professors Ming-Der Huang and Han-Yi Fu in bioinformatics, biochemistry, proteomics and genomics respectively, Assistant Professor Shih-Hui Liu in bioinformatics; Assistant Professor Hsin-Yuan Tsai of the Department of Marine Biotechnology and Resources in charge of bioinformatics and genomics, and Professor Jong-Kang Liu, who is still paying attention to the IBO after retirement, is an expert in microbiology, and Professor David Chao is an expert in parasitology and immunology. In addition, Alumni from the Department of Biological Sciences were also invited to participate in the training, including Dr. Shu-Chun Chuang and Dr. Chun-Kue Liao, who are currently working at the Orthopaedic Research Center in Kaohsiung Medical University, to participate in the practical training on invertebrate and plant taxonomy and anatomy respectively.
Professor Jiin-Tsuey Cheng said that the 34th IBO Competition will be hosted by the United Arab Emirates next year, and the IBO team will continue to select and train high school students with outstanding biology talents to participate in the competition, so as to expand students' international horizons.
