Chair Professor Kin-Lu Wong of NSYSU Electrical Engineering Department has been awarded the 2016 National Academic Award (Chair Professorship) from the Ministry of Education (MOE). Wong pioneered in planar antenna research since 1990; in 1999, with the transformation of the national policy and industry, mobile communications started to boom and drastically increase the demands on internal antenna research, and Wong and his students made a promising debut in the industry. Wong mentions that “persistence” is his conviction in his devotion to the field of antenna research.

“I want to do something that is helpful to the industries in Taiwan,” Wong said. Wong changed from the field of plasma fusion research to antenna research because he felt that just publishing papers with no follow-up influence is meaningless, and can merely allow Taiwan to become manufacturers for foreign companies. “We’ve come a long way with no equipment, no measurement experience, and no academic connections” Wong recalled the difficulties he faced at the beginning of antenna research. However, he found the practical application of planar antennas very promising, and thus continued his research.

Antenna designs faced a significant turning point when mobile communications transitioned from 2G to 3G and changed from the external antennas to hidden internal antennas for the mobile phones. Wong’s antenna research designs perfectly matched the requirements of the industry, and the antenna engineers cultivated in Wong’s lab were all in popular demand of the communication industry.

Wong’s team has published over 800 journal articles and conference papers. The planar antennas developed by Wong’s team have been granted over 250 patents in Taiwan, China, U.S., and Europe. Wong’s lab has ranked among the top in both academic and application achievements. Wong also maintained close connections with the communication industry. About half of the top ten international mobile phone brands collaborated with Wong for technical exchanges. Wong received numerous inquiries in an exhibition at Beijing in November 2016. “They were amazed by Taiwan’s technology in Massive MIMO antennas development for terminal devices” he said. Some leading mobile phone brands eagerly expressed their wishes to establish technical exchanges with NSYSU. Wong is confident that the NSYSU antenna lab can be ranked as the top leader in mobile antennas in the world in both academic and application achievements.

Wong’s recent research focused on the development of Massive MIMO antennas for terminal devices. His research team has successfully developed the promising 12 and 16 MIMO antennas for the fifth-generation Multi-Gbps smartphone and the innovative Massive MIMO Capacity and Throughput Testbed for Terminal Devices, which contribute a huge advance to the future development of 5G mobile communications. Wong mentioned that Taiwan misestimated the trend of Long Term Evolution (LTE) and Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMax), which made Taiwan’s post-4G communication industry development to lag behind the world. Wong predicted 2017 to be the critical year for the development of 5G communications, in which China will very likely take the lead. Wong hopes that Taiwan will be back in the lead of the world communication industry in 5G communications.
