Department of Materials and Optoelectronic Science signs MOU on dual-degree program with Yonsei University

New international collaboration tied! Mitch Chou – Vice President for Research and Development and professor of the Department of Materials and Optoelectronic Science (DoMOS), and Liu-Wen Chang – Chair of the DoMOS of NSYSU delegated a group of six teachers and two students to visit the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Yonsei University from November 7 to 8, 2019. Both departments signed an MOU on international academic collaboration and dual-degree program. They agreed on the exchange of students and teachers, as well as joint laboratory resources and joint employment of professors in the future, which will noticeably increase the academic impact of both universities on an international level.
The DoMOS stated that from spring semester 2020, the postgraduate students of the DoMOS whose applications for dual-degree program were approved, will travel to Korea to study and conduct research. Master program students will spend a year on exchange, while PhD students, half a year. After completing their studies, the students will obtain master/doctoral degree diplomas from both NSYSU and Yonsei University.
Moreover, Yonsei University offers generous scholarships for 3 to 5 students of DoMOS at NSYSU: not only waiving the tuition fee at Yonsei, but also providing a scholarship of USD 4,800 per semester (about NTD 15,000). With additional monthly scholarship of NTD 10,000 offered by NSYSU, the students can fully concentrate on their studies and research without worrying about their finances. DoMOS mentions that besides enjoying plentiful resources of both universities, the students can gain international experience and even build up their social network while in Korea, which may be of great benefit to their future career development and their life experience. There are already three students who were approved to go to Korea next spring.
Yonsei University, located in Seoul, was established in 1885. It’s one of three top universities in Korea, ranking 107th in the world and 17th in Asia according to the QS World University Rankings. Yonsei University also ranks 2nd in Korea for the field of materials science, and has a Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI) of 2.00. Its academic performance have attracted global attention. Both universities already agreed on the organization of a bilateral symposium at NSYSU in April 2020. At the scheduled time, more departments and institutes of the College of Engineering will be invited to join. The Department of Materials and Optoelectronic Science actively participates in the comprehensive internationalization of the University and will offer more and more international study opportunities for students in the future.
