NSYSU signs an MOU with Metal Industries R&D Center to jointly promote Kaohsiung Marine Technology Industrial Innovation Zone
In view of urgent need of professionals in the field of offshore wind power generation and to promote industrialization and research in the field of marine technology, National Sun Yat-Sen University (NSYSU) signed an MOU on cooperation with Metal Industries R&D Center on November 26th, reinforcing industry-academia collaboration. In the future, both parties will train professionals and researchers for offshore wind power generation and marine technology, organize joint research endeavours, promote bilateral affairs, exchange academic experience, and foster marine technology industry in Taiwan.
Metal Industries R&D Center assists the Ministry of Economic Affairs in the promotion of Kaohsiung Marine Technology Industrial Innovation Zone by establishing an international-class training facility for professionals in the field of offshore wind power generation and conduct professional training courses. NSYSU President Ying-Yao Cheng said, that NSYSU is the only research university in South Taiwan with a separate College of Marine Sciences, dedicated to the promotion of research in marine sciences, engineering and technology, marine natural resources and biotechnology. In the future, Metal Industries R&D Center will integrate the strengths of the departments and institutes at NSYSU related to marine resources and technologies (Department of Marine Environment and Engineering, Institute of Undersea Technology, Department of Biological Sciences, Department of Marine Biotechnology and Resources) to plan training courses, industry internship programs and a matchmaking platform for professionals, increase graduates’ employment opportunities, and alleviate the problem of human resources shortage in the industry of offshore wind power generation and marine technology in Taiwan.
NSYSU President Ying-Yao Cheng mentioned, that, as for the training of professionals, the University obtained the approval from the Ministry of Education to establish a new Master's Program in Offshore Wind Power and Maritime Engineering, and will start recruiting students in 2020. In the future, the training for maritime engineering for offshore wind power industry will include three major fields, letting students gain an interdisciplinary and comprehensive learning experience while at university, and, at the same time, gain practical experience during internship in the related industry. In this way, the students will gain both academic and practical abilities, fitting in the requirements of the industry, and even becoming professionals to lead the development of the offshore wind power industry in Taiwan. Among these, the fields of study and internship programs include technologies for offshore marine constructions and project management, survey and analysis of the marine construction environment, including geology, marine meteorology or marine biology, and design and construction of offshore structures. What is more, the students and the industry will be given the opportunity to interact.
As for marine technology, the Metal Industries R&D Center assists the Ministry of Economic Affairs in the installation of underwater technology and a laboratory for marine biological resources in the Zone. The Chairman of the Center Ren-Yih Lin said, that in the future, the Center will rely on NSYSU’s experience and development of technology for underwater inspection systems, and become a member of Underwater Vehicle R&D Association to develop underwater vehicles. Besides, collaboration with a related laboratory will be tied to introduce the artificial intelligence system for shrimp farming developed by NSYSU in the fish farm by the Shinda Port to increase the production of the local farming industry. Chairman Ren-Yih Lin said, that, having signed an MOU on cooperation, they will be focusing on such developmental issues as marine power resources, including smart farming, underwater vehicles, blue energy, integrating both parties’ technology for offshore wind power generation, investment in and arrangement of marine technology. This will be of great benefit to the research in marine technologies in Taiwan and construction projects, hoping to bring together study and application, achieve the synergy of learning and research.
