New NSYSU Gym officially open and available for free trial
The new NSYSU Gym at National Sun Yat-sen University is officially open, after several months of construction. The new Gym offers a two-floor 495 m2 space, divided into three areas dedicated to cardio, weight training, and high-intensity functional training and 63 machines of 38 different types, including pectoral fly, whole body extension, stretch trainer, a 45-degree hyper abdomen extension machine, leg press, and also a shower area. During the summer, there was a time-limited tryout program; during the fall semester, the Gym is available for free to the teachers, staff, and students of the University upon showing their ID.
NSYSU Gym is located on the northern side of the bleachers of the Athletic Field. It used to be a billiard room; its construction started in November last year and during this time it has been through many changes and adjustments. Thanks to the great help of the people involved, it was completed in August 2020. Vice President for Student Affairs Ching-Li Yang said that the proximity of the new NSYSU Gym to the sea raises the humidity in the building, thus the inner walls were left “naked”, industrial-style and decorated with designer slogans and lights. Mirrors on the walls optically enlarge the space, perfectly matching the modern industrial style of the neat and orderly gym and its equipment.
Besides thanking University President Ying-Yao Cheng for his great support and the
assistance of the Office of General Affairs, Vice President Yang extended her gratitude to the former Director of the Physical and Health Division – Professor Tzu-Chao Chuang of the Department of Electrical Engineering, who kept on supporting the project as adviser even after having left the office, supervising the construction quality, inviting a renowned domestic interior designer to indicate elements to improve, and obtain the current design NSYSU Gym.
Physical and Health Division, Office of Student Affairs, said that common problems in gyms, such as insufficient weights, narrow space between machines, lack of warmup and stretching area, bad acoustics, and lack of a clear workout plan, were taken into account when decorating the NSYSU Gym: the space between machines was made larger and the ceiling higher to avoid giving a sense of oppression and to offer a better experience for the users.
The students and employees of the University can enter the new gym for free during the whole fall semester upon showing their ID at the entrance. The regulations of the new gym are roughly the same as of the old gym. However, to maintain the new mats in good condition for a long time, the users are required to bring a pair of training shoes with clean soles to wear in the new NSYSU Gym. Surrounded by the athletic field, swimming pool, and tennis court, the new gym will bring a new spirit of sport to the University and help the students take care of their health and fitness.
