NSYSU to release Sustainable Development Report 2020 to respond to SDGs
(Provided by Social Engagement Center) To achieve global environmental sustainability, the United Nations launched 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015, which will serve as guiding principles for the development of organizations, enterprises, and educational institutions worldwide by the year 2030. To respond to the SDGs, National Sun Yat-sen University implemented several USR projects and established an inter-academic first-level unit – Social Engagement Center (SEC) to promote sustainable development at NSYSU. This year, SEC plans to cooperate with the Center for Quality Assurance (CQA) to publish the NSYSU Sustainable Development Report 2020.
To let the staff of the University have a clearer idea of the University’s responsibility to the society and sustainability, the SEC and the Institute of Public Affairs Management (IPAM) jointly organized the University Social Responsibility (USR) and Sustainability Report Symposium, inviting three speakers: Jun Kung, who is the accountant of Deloitte Taiwan, Professor Hung-Yee Shu of Hungkuang University (HU), and Liang-Yi Chang – Director of the Research Department of Plan B Inc. to share their experience in promoting sustainable development from the perspective of an enterprise, a university, and a consulting company, respectively. Executive Director of SEC Professor Ching-Li Yang pointed out that sustainable development is an important trend in any field, and also one of the responsibilities of the University. She hopes to integrate the University’s entire capacity in the future to promote sustainable development on campus.
The first speaker, Jun Kung said that accountants have always been companies’ close partners and that they can help companies accurately monitor achievements in sustainable development and social responsibility by consolidating data and disclosing information. Kung said that large organizations have a wide scope of operation and have different stakeholders at all levels, thus the company must grasp a main axis in sustainable development promotion. He also encouraged the combination of USR and CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) for additional advantages of professionals’ training and establishing regional connections.
Professor Hung-Yee Shu shared his experience in promoting sustainable development on campus. As the Vice President of HU, he was responsible for the overall planning and integration of HU’s reports on sustainability. Professor Shu said that HU, through long-term certifications, accumulated comprehensive data on its academic affairs, and thus could accurately control the effectiveness of its results in the promotion of sustainable development, keep track of what needs to be improved, and provide a detailed and reliable record in reports, not only for external review but also to continuously improve its standards. In 2018, HU was awarded the Corporate Sustainability Award and the TOP 50 Corporate Sustainability Award for its overall performance.
Liang-Yi Chang – Director of the Research Department of Plan B Inc. elaborated on the origins and meaning of each of the 17 SDGs. Chang emphasized that Plan B was the first team to promote SDGs in China. By combining design and action, he hopes to let people understand and apply SDGs in daily life. Regarding cooperation with academia, Plan B assisted the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) in compiling the report on the University’s sustainable development and including the SDGs into its academic affairs and displayed NCKU’s achievements in sustainable development in an appealing way.
This event gave members of USR project teams and University units responsible for the sustainable development a clearer idea about the promotion of sustainable development on campus. Executive Director Yang said that she believes that now everyone will see sustainability on campus and university social practice as one’s own responsibility. The host – Deputy Dean of the College of Management Jui-Kun Kuo concluded that the sustainability report, besides keeping a record on the University’s progress, shows its efforts in USR. In addition to promoting sustainability on campus, NSYSU is committed to talent cultivation, hoping to promote further the concept of sustainable development.
