National Sun Yat-sen University and Brogent Group established multi-dimensional somatosensory laboratory with Brogent’s somatosensory e-sports platform
A multi-dimensional somatosensory laboratory with Brogent’s somatosensory e-sports platform, established by the cooperation between National Sun Yat-sen University and Brogent Group, a global leader in somatosensory entertainment equipment, was unveiled in September. In the future, both parties will strengthen the R&D of somatosensory technology, incorporate advanced technologies such as 5G communication and augmented reality into daily life, and then innovate them, jointly develop somatosensory technology, and promote the cultivation of interdisciplinary talents.
Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Chairman of the Joint Research & Development Center of NSYSU and Brogent Jen-Hao Teng pointed out that in the past, two of Brogent’s somatosensory e-sports platforms were established at the University, with precise somatosensory control and ultimate gravitational force feedback function. Popular products developed on this type of platform include lightning showdown and racing somatosensory platform, which can also be used to further develop high-precision fighting or racing simulation platforms. The multi-dimensional somatosensory laboratory and the somatosensory e-sports platform in the future can be combined with such technologies as 5G communication, artificial intelligence, and immersive experience. The possible applications include remote somatosensory control, medical assistive devices, emotions evaluation, device simulation, to more substantially integrate somatosensory virtual reality technology and promote somatosensory technology.
NSYSU President Ying-Yao Cheng said that R&D capacity is one of the most important determiners of success in the industry and emphasized that NSYSU has cooperated with Brogent for many years and established the Joint Research & Development Center of NSYSU and Brogent in 2016. The Center used somatosensory signal detection technology combined with AI to develop technologies for gesture recognition, brain waves, electrocardiogram, and heartbeat detection; as for digital content design development, it collaborated with the NSYSU departments related to theatre arts, music, and information to develop works such as Si Wan Entertainment Park, Si Wan Corridor, and Archery Simulator. The somatosensory platform can be developed into more diverse sports platforms.

The Joint Research & Development Center of NSYSU and Brogent is committed to integrating the expertise of the professors of the University’s departments and institutes to form a cross-field somatosensory technology team, and integrate somatosensory technology into real life and develop a new culture. Chih-Hung Ouyang, NSYSU’s outstanding alumnus and CEO of Brogent Group, said that he hopes that the resources of the University will drive Brogent’s growth and that the unusual result of this industry-academia cooperation – multi-dimensional somatosensory laboratory, together with the somatosensory e-sports platform will accumulate the capacity of the University’s R&D teams to support the industry, enhance the quality of the company’s products and international competitiveness. This R&D cooperation is expected to support the development of southern Taiwan and expand internationally.
