Shyi-Kun Yu: Taiwan and US might establish diplomatic relations soon

(Report by student journalist) To broaden students’ global vision, Si Wan College invited the President of the Legislative Yuan Shyi-Kun Yu to give a speech on the opportunities and challenges awaiting Taiwan in the new international situation. President Yu said that the clash between China and the USA is stirred by very different political values of these two countries and that it will persist after the pandemic. He said that Taiwan should get an advantage by making concessions and avoiding provocation while maintaining defense capabilities. He also said he believes that the establishment of diplomatic relations between Taiwan and the USA is near, as both the public opinion and two major political parties in the USA support Taiwan.

How to discern the international situation? Yu compared the situation to the sea: waves are a visible effect of ocean currents and they cannot affect the direction of the currents. What’s visible might make people confused and we need to understand the underlying causes. Thus, to really understand the international situation, one needs to identify the underlying causes. Is Taiwan not being able to enter the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) going to have major consequences? Yu believes that although it will have its influence, it will not be as significant. Under the pressure from China, Taiwan should strive for self-reliance – the heavens will help those who help themselves, as the Chinese saying goes.

Discussing the opportunities and challenges of Taiwan in the global situation, Yu said that both major political parties and the public opinion in the USA support the country’s friendly policy towards Taiwan. This year, 415 members of the House of Representatives voted in support of the Taiwan Allies International Protection and Enhancement Initiative Act (0 voted against) – an action expressing disagreement with China’s long-term oppression of Taiwan that improves Taiwan’s international status. Yu also mentioned that the passing of Hong Kong national security law impaired the credibility of the Chinese Communist Party. All these changes in the international situation can propel the establishment of Taiwan-US diplomatic relations.

How should Taiwan face the international situation? Yu said that Taiwan, in its relations with China, should stay alert and prepared and not resort to provocation. He also mentioned that Taiwan seems to be just a passive observer at present but in reality, it is getting an advantage by making concessions, taking the initiative in economic affairs, successfully containing the epidemic, and gaining international recognition for its democracy and freedom.

NSYSU President Ying-Yao Cheng said that the President of the Legislative Yuan Shyi-Kun Yu started his political career in 1980 and dedicated himself to supporting the democratization of Taiwan. President Yu had held such key positions in party and government administration as a city councilor, Yilan County Mayor, President of Executive Yuan, Secretary-General to R.O.C. President, Chairperson of the Democratic Progressive Party. In 2002, he became the President of Executive Yuan, an at-large member of the Legislative Yuan in 2020, and eventually, the President of the Legislative Yuan. The 40th anniversary of NSYSU coincides with the 40th anniversary of President Yu’s career in politics.
