NSYSU ties strategic alliance with R.O.C. Military Academy
National Sun Yat-sen University tied a strategic alliance with R.O.C. Military Academy. NSYSU President Ying-Yao Cheng and the President of R.O.C. Military Academy Chan-Yih Chen signed an agreement on collaboration in education, joint employment of faculty members, student exchange, research development, and joint sports activities. Both institutions will put into play their strengths in technological R&D and social and military affairs for a fruitful academic partnership, and expand the scope of military education and technological research to cultivate outstanding military professionals with scientific research capacity.
NSYSU is one of five top research universities in Taiwan and should make a contribution to national security, said President Cheng. He said that this time, the agreement with the R.O.C. Military Academy was different. First, both schools will promote undergraduate student exchange; the Academy will send students of each department to NSYSU for an entire semester of courses (including those in individual research) for them to experience a different campus culture. Secondly, international students faculty of NSYSU will provide English-taught courses for in language exchange with the Academy’s students and the Academy’s foreign exchange students could come to NSYSU for Mandarin courses, which will improve the language abilities of future military officers. Furthermore, NSYSU will establish an in-service program for the R.O.C. Military Academy, serving for their cadre, advisors, and teacher assistants. The University will fulfill its USR by helping the R.O.C. Armed Forces cultivate military officers with scientific research capacity.
NSYSU President Cheng further explained that in the future, the University will use its rich academic resources to enhance the technological research capacities of the country’s military, cultivate the management cadre of national defense, and inject fresh energy into the technological research and education at both institutions. He gave an example: the gyroscope (rotational sensor) is one of the key elements of navigation systems and can have a wide application in national defense, commercial airlines, satellites, and novel unmanned vehicles. The team of the Department of Photonics developed the world’s first miniaturized Si photonic fiber-optic gyroscope driver chip. Its volume does not surpass 5 mm2, and the production cost was reduced to one-third of the traditional gyroscope. The invention has limitless applications.
In addition, wireless communication is not only an important tool for communication but also for the popularization of the Internet of Things, connected car system, and smart production; the antenna is indispensable for wireless communication, while diversity and personalization are the new trends in user experience standards in the industry. The research by the National Chair Professor and Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering at NSYSU Kin-Lu Wong was globally acknowledged. His team has designed multiple antennas for application in 5G smartphones and tested them with a measurement system. His achievement has attracted a lot of attention of the global academia and industry.

NSYSU established the Master's Degree Program in Administrative Management for active-duty military personnel starting from the academic year 2019-2020, and this November, it signed an agreement with the Ministry of National Defense on the undergraduate program in national defense. Both parties will strive for mutual benefit, jointly cultivating professionals, collaborating in academic research and development, and sports activities.
