NSYSU and Kaohsiung City Police launch safety app
Recently, the sad news about the murder of a Malaysian student of a university in Tainan struck the Taiwanese community. NSYSU has thus decided to strengthen the safety measures on campus. Starting from October 31st, the University has been in frequent contact with Kaohsiung City Police Department and the employees in charge of campus lightning and monitoring equipment, emergency buttons, and nighttime supervision. The University published a list of recommendations to increase students’ safety on campus and, together with Gushan Precinct, launched an app for reporting safety issues – 110 Video Reporting System. The Director of the Gushan Precinct Hsi-Shan Yeh visited NSYSU to explain the functions of the application for effective crime prevention and to scare off offenders.
When the sad news was reported, NSYSU President Ying-Yao Cheng, Senior Vice President of the University I-Yu Huang, and Vice President for General Affairs Yuan-Chung Lin invited police officers of the Gushan Precinct and Sinbin Police Station to discuss safety on campus: the ways to enhance campus monitoring and safety measures, and the application of smart technology in crime prevention. Senior Vice President Huang said that the 110 Video Reporting System includes GPS localization function and allows users to report safety issues with a video recording or text for the police to receive evidence immediately. With one click, the information will be sent to the general unit; the person reporting the issue will be able to speak to the police officer handling the case via videoconference. Director Yeh emphasized that, according to the requirements of each case, the police officer in charge can use the screen of the reporting person’s smartphone to issue a warning to scare away the potential offender.
NSYSU said that from 2019, the University has installed nearly 80 street lamps on the campus parking lot, and after receiving positive feedback from the students, it is testing the whole monitoring equipment in the public spaces of the campus and the emergency buttons in the toilets to ensure their correct operation. The inspection of the persons entering the campus by the main gate after midnight was strengthened and the security officers and guards at the university increased patrolling frequency.
Besides, after 9 p.m., the control over the vehicles entering the parking lot by the seawall will be strengthened. In addition to the surroundings of the campus, the Administration Building, the College of Marine Sciences, the College of Liberal Arts, and the Dorms H and L of the Tsui Heng Villa will be patrolled with an increased frequency to improve the safety on campus.
