College of Marine Sciences signs MOU with National Academy of Marine Research
(Provided by College of Marine Sciences) To promote academic collaboration in the field of marine sciences, the College of Marine Sciences (CMS) at NSYSU, and the National Academy of Marine Research (NAMR) signed an MOU to conduct collaborative joint research in the field of marine sciences and marine ecology, share environmental survey data and resources for enhancing the effectiveness of research, and promote training and exchange of researchers.
To respond to the government’s green energy policy, the CMS and NAMR conduct collaborative research on offshore wind power generation plants, to studying the potential influence of changes in the benthic marine ecosystem to establish background baseline information for environmental monitoring to enhance ecological conservation. The results of the collaborative research may serve as a reference in the future for policy developments in offshore wind power generation plants. With the MOU signed, both parties will join hands to steadily engage in marine environment monitoring and biodiversity research, collaborate in research in the South China Sea, conduct deep-sea exploration, research of monitoring technologies for canyon dynamics and underwater soundscape, R&D in marine energy and key technologies, marine culture and submarine cultural heritage, and even social sciences – marine law and governance.
Marine sciences became a development focus of the University soon after its foundation. In 1986, CMS was established, dedicated to generating novel knowledge to the field of marine sciences including biotechnology, marine environment, engineering technology, offshore governance, and marine affairs. It has become a strategic base for marine research and education, and its research results are widely acknowledged in academic circles. Dean of the CMS, Prof. Chin-Chang Hung said that marine sciences are an interdisciplinary area including a wide variety of subjects. He hopes that both parties can develop a comprehensive collaboration in marine science research including undersea technology, marine law and governance, and sustainable utilization of marine resources.
The National Academy of Marine Research in the Kaohsiung Porwas established in 2019 to assist the Ocean Affairs Council in the marine policy plan, research on marine resources, marine science research, development of the marine industry and human resource training, and establishment of the National Ocean Data Bank. President of the NAMR Yung-Fang Chiu said that the collaboration between CMS and NAMR will include undertaking expeditions worldwide from Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, and pursuance of sustainable goals.
