Smart and efficient mid-term testing at NSYSU

(Provided by College of Social Sciences) Smart City & Smart Mobility Co-Learning Group of NSYSU started a new course this semester – Media Literacy in the Smart Era, inviting news presenter Crystal Liu for an online mid-term exam for the course students. The course design included some innovative elements; besides technological convenience, the students could have an in-depth experience of the changes that comprehensive smartification brings to people’s lives in our fast-changing times.
Crystal Liu, in collaboration with the information department of a technological company, compiled an exam application for the mid-term exam of the course. The students used their smartphones to scan the QR code to access the test questions and submitted their answers without the need for an instructor to correct their tests – the application would show the score upon submission of the answers. Besides, the application included several anti-cheating functions: once the test taker enters the program and starts the test, he/she cannot switch between test pages; if discovered to do so, the program would immediately report the student’s ID number to the teacher or teaching assistant. Besides, the order of exam questions was different depending on students’ ID numbers. Students sitting next to each other would have questions in a different order.
Liu said that the use of smart examination methods not only can help us save paper but also, the convenience of modern technology can improve testing efficiency. Convener of the Smart City & Smart Mobility Co-Learning Group and Professor of the Department of Political Economy Yu-Kang Lee was happy about the new experience. He said that in the smart era, the greatest impetus for the advancement of human society is innovation; he hopes that the application can be applied for more courses at the University.
During class, Hsiang-Ning Chen, a senior of the Department of Political Economy, asked whether nowadays the media are increasingly reliant on social media broadcast and whether Taiwan will be controlled by tech giants in the future, just like some media stations abroad. Crystal Liu responded that the use of social networking sites by the media is indeed a trend nowadays, however, the media in Taiwan are not large-scale, so whether they will be controlled by tech giants remains a question. Teaching assistant Chia-Hsin Chen said that the course students responded enthusiastically to the course and exceeded her initial expectations. She said that she hopes that NSYSU students will continue to interact with their teachers and make good use of the valuable resources provided by the co-learning group.
