Students’ original graduation song records campus memories

2021-06-28

(Report by student journalist) This year’s NSYSU graduation song is all about students’ memories from the campus: the steam whistle, the tides, the sunsets. A band composed of six graduates of the Department of Music released this year’s graduation music video: "模樣used to be_", with a catchy tune and lyrics referring to NSYSU’s symbols. One of the team members, Yu-Chia Su, said that the band recorded four years of their life on campus in the lyrics, hoping to resonate with other students and recall the good things about NSYSU for those leaving the campus.

The music video by NSYSU students entered a graduation songs contest and distinguished itself from other competitors. The band included this year’s graduating students and an alumnus: senior student Yu-Chia Su was the composer and producer of the song, another senior – Yun-Yao Lin and alumnus Po-Han Yang – the singers, senior Hsiao-Ke Li – the lyricist, senior Po-Yuan Wu – the guitarist and senior Wei-Chuan Chan – the bassist. The music video was produced by NSYSU Student Association.

"模樣used to be_" adopts an original approach to composition: the song starts and closes with a radio button click. “I imagine that in the future when people hear this song, it will be like pressing the button of a radio player and coming back to student life”, said Yu-Chia Su laughing. The band made a big effort to compose the song and write the lyrics. The music includes nearly 70 sound effects and has a rich multi-layered structure. The lyrics interchange pursuing one’s dreams with passion with the symbols of NSYSU that are part of students’ everyday life, such as monkeys, the sunset, 5 NTD congee, the whistle sound of ships. The lyricist, Hsiao-Ke Li, said that he has the deepest feelings about the phrase “see the tide ebb for the last time” (最後一次看著潮水退去) in the song lyrics. “The best thing about NSYSU is to be able to see the ocean when you’re out!”

The band also shared the story behind the production of the graduation song. The most challenging part was time management. They had to complete the composition, lyrics, recording, and mixing within just one week! Yu-Chia Su acknowledged that despite working under time pressure, the band managed to maintain high standards. Although it was difficult to avoid having clashing opinions, all members were accepting as they worked towards a common goal. “I was so happy to complete this work. We would only release a final result that we are all satisfied with.” Finally, the band had to upload the video before the contest deadline for submission.

The script for the video, shooting, and editing was all done by the students. The President of NSYSU Student Association, Tsy-Sheng Lin said that the creative concept for the music video matched the lyrics of the song, depicting a graduate, already a working professional, recalling her student life memories from the campus upon hearing the song played on the radio. NSYSU Student Association also created a special Instagram profile for 2021 graduates, with music video materials and good wishes from this year’s graduates of various departments, institutes, and teams. Lin, who is graduating this year, said that NSYSU is a beautiful place with mountains and the ocean. He wished to leave something for the University before he graduates and hoped that the University can maintain the tradition of recording graduation songs in the years to come.
