2021-08-11
(Provided by College of Management) Students of NSYSU College of Management joined the 2021 AVM Creative Competition (the 5th edition of the competition) for the first time and made the University the biggest winner, bringing home one second prize and four Excellence Awards in two categories: the Standard Umbrella Case and Corporate Case Design.
Over 50 teams joined the 5th AVM Creative Competition, representing universities from across Taiwan. Teams from the College of Management participated in the competition for the first time, with a total of 14 registered teams. The team “PUIPUI” (a name inspired by the sound that guinea pigs make when they are happy; the team chose guinea pigs as a spiritual symbol, hoping to bring joy to the world as guinea pigs do and to keep moving forward) of the Department of Business Management won second prize in the Standard Umbrella Case category. Two teams from the Department of Finance, “We are the Right Team (有我們就隊)” and “Our Team, So What?”, along with a mixed team of students from the Department of Business Management and the Department of Finance, “Unibrella”, each won Excellence Awards in the Standard Umbrella Case category. Meanwhile, a team from the Department of Finance, “Strike the Opponents ‘til they are Can Xi Xi (慘羲羲, miserable)”, won the Excellence Award in the Corporate Case Design category.
The College of Management explained that in March last year it established the NSYSU Integrative Strategic Value Management System (iSVMS) University Branch Center. In recent years, the College has been actively developing its capacity in business big data analysis, and is deeply aware of the need for quality data in order to come up with more valuable information. In view of this, the Director of the Center, Professor Wei-Che Tsai, with the guidance and encouragement of the College Dean, San-Yih Hwang, has been actively promoting the use of Activity Value Management (AVM) in teaching and encouraging students to participate in the competition.
On the day before the competition, NSYSU College of Management organized a preparatory camp, inviting Professor Chei-Chang Chiou of the Department of Accounting at National Changhua University of Education to guide the participating students, and gave out a book by Professor Anne Wu – “The Ultimate Answer to Business Strategy” to help the students understand AVM better.
The student teams considerably benefited by participating in the competition; working on case drills helped them advance their knowledge of accounting theories. One of the teams from the Department of Finance, “We are the Right Team”, applied what they had learned in practice by participating in the competition and hoped to further strengthen their weaknesses. The “Unibrella” team also applied what they had learned in class to business cases and came up with practical business strategies. Using managerial accounting and cost accounting knowledge to design a strategic business management model can deepen one’s understanding and application of AVM. The team from the Department of Finance, “Our Team, So What?”, explained that they had learned about the wonder of AVM in depth and realized the importance of companies’ financial reports.
