Sustainable City Forum on August 10 to draw plan for future development of Kaohsiung Port

(Provided by Program in Interdisciplinary Studies) How to envisage the future of Kaohsiung Port City in line with UN Sustainable Development Goals is a critical question. National Sun Yat-sen University and Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) will hold the Sustainable Port-City Forum online on August 10, inviting experts of the industry, government, and academia to start a dialogue on port city development, sustainable engineering, the future masterplan, and intergenerational dialogue. The Forum will also include an online virtual exhibition for visitors to get to know port cities and how sustainability goals can apply to future development.
Associate Dean of Si Wan College Shiau-Yun Lu, who specializes in marine engineering, mentioned that in June this year, Kaohsiung Port represented Taiwan in the 2021 World Port Sustainability Program (WPSP) by the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) and submitted the “1+1>2” concept, including the relocation of the heavy industry and planning space for the revitalization of the old port. The concept won the recognition of the jury and made Kaohsiung Port win the first prize in the category of Resilient Infrastructure. Professor Lu said that this prize was not easy to win and that it positions Kaohsiung on the global stage in sustainability issues together with such port cities as Rotterdam, Singapore, and Hamburg. This time, the Forum, co-organized with Taiwan International Ports Corporation, is expected to let more people know the different aspects of port cities. The award can spark more ideas and visions for the future outlook of the city.
Minister of Transportation and Communications Wang Kwo-tsai, Deputy Mayor of Kaohsiung City Charles Lin, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) Hsien-Yi Lee, and NSYSU President Ying-Yao Cheng are invited to attend the Forum. The keynote speech will be delivered by Christopher Woolridge of the European Sea Ports Organization. Besides, because the overall port city development is closely related to peoples’ lives, the Forum will include a panel discussion on port cities between Vice President and CEO of Kaohsiung Port Kow-Ming Chang and Deputy Mayor of Kaohsiung City Charles Lin, who integrated various sustainability aspects and concepts. To let the audience understand the reasons behind the award for Kaohsiung Port in-depth, senior researcher at TIPC Yu-Chuan Wang and manager of China Engineering Consultants, Inc. Tung-Hung Tsai will discuss all implemented actions and ideals of environmental sustainability engineering projects in Kaohsiung Port.
The Forum will also include the perspective of academia. The head of the Office of Marine Science and Technology, National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology, Hui-Huang Tai and Professor Shiau-Yun Lu of the Department of Marine Environment and Engineering, NSYSU, will share a global perspective on the sustainable development of Kaohsiung Port. The Intergenerational Port City panel will be a cross-generational dialogue between the designer of Dagang Bridge, Hsi-Chung Wang, and the former director of Kaohsiung Museum of History, Yu-Feng Wang, who hope to exchange history and modernity to spark different ideas on sustainable development of Kaohsiung Port.
In addition to the program, the Forum will also include an online exhibition, made available to visit on the day before the event. The online exhibition is divided into different thematic areas, displaying a variety of topics, including green port, sustainable engineering, environmental monitoring, and cultural and creative design. When browsing the exhibition online, the participants can chat and interact with people around them and get to know more about Kaohsiung Port in a fun way.
