New vehicle parking permits for new academic year

2021-09-27

With the new semester just around the corner, NSYSU organized a contest for the design of the vehicle parking permit, pooling a variety of creative designs. With nearly a thousand votes submitted, the funny design by a sophomore of the Department of Business Administration Tsai-Chi Wang depicting an angry monkey was chosen for the new vehicle parking permit for the new academic year.

The students submitted 19 works, most of them including representative features of NSYSU campus. The work by Tsai-Chi Wang won with 23.9% votes. It depicts an angry Formosan macaque, a common species in the Chaishan Mountain, baring its teeth.

Tsai-Chi said that her inspiration for the design came from the classic leader depicting a roaring lion by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, a Hollywood film studio. Tsai-Chi changed the roaring lion for a roaring Formosan macaque and added a caption to ward off potential wrongdoers from the scooter, creatively playing with words.

The winner of the second prize was Shih-Cheng Chiu, this year’s graduate of the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. His work embodies a unique vintage style and depicts a monkey sitting on a yellow scooter with the University’s badge. The third prize winner was a junior of the Department of Finance, En-Chi Tseng, who is in charge of the aesthetic publicity of the department association, having previously taken a free course of the Web Program Design Club. She wanted to make her design cute and chose a warm-colored base, combined with a big sun – a signature of Kaohsiung. Other works included the images of the University’s stele, the sunset in Sizihwan Bay, and the waves as background, and each had a unique and innovative concept.

Students who voted appreciated all the works in the competition and some said that they had no idea there were so many hidden creative talents among the students and that each work could become the next vehicle parking permit of NSYSU. “I have been studying at NSYSU for 4 years and now we have the best vehicle parking permit!”, said one of the students. In the future, similar activities will be held, not only to renew the vehicle parking permits but also to stimulate the creative potential of students.

NSYSU is located at the western foothill of Shoushan Mountain, and because of the hilly topography, most students use motorcycles to get around. In the past, the design of scooter parking permits was decided by the Vehicle Management Committee. This year, the first contest for the design of the vehicle parking permit attracted many students to submit their ideas, which gave them a sense of participation.
