The Teaching and Learning Development and Resources Center (TLDRC) at NSYSU hasrecently organized an information meeting for freshmen of EMI (English as Medium of Instruction) programs. Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Po-Chiao Lin and Associate Dean of Si Wan College Dr. Virginia Shen presented the plan for EMI programs and discussed with the students of the first cohort of these programs at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, and the Department of Chemistry. Dr. Lin mentioned that NSYSU has actively been planning EMI programs and the related measures since last year, such as improving the full English teaching environment, offering English-taught courses, and providing subsidies for students exchange abroad, aiming to enhance the international competitiveness of EMI program students with both professionalism and English proficiency upon graduation.
“In the future, all students will graduate with an EMI level certification level indicating the percentage for completing EMI courses.” Dr. Lin explained that the NSYSU diplomas will include the certification level to facilitate the identification of the graduates’ English proficiency and professional English level. He emphasized that students of EMI programs will have an advantage when applying for exchange abroad and will be able to apply for the department scholarship if they meet grade and credit standards. He encouraged the students to strive for more support.
Dr. Shen gave an introduction to the various EMI learning resources, such as the Si Wan International Salon that organizes English-language events every semester and invites students to practice their speaking skills by joining conversation sessions in English led by international students Monday through Thursday at noon. She also introduced the EMI General Education Honors Program, which she sees suitable for the students of EMI programs, as besides teaching professional disciplines, it provides training in research and presentation skills, helps broaden students’ international perspective and lets them gain practical experience before stepping into workplace. Andy Worcester, an American YouTuber and English teacher at Si Wan College, added that the College holds English Club meetings every Friday at noon this semester at English Plaza located in L Dorm to allow students to interact with foreigners living in Taiwan and broaden their horizons.
“Thanks to the University’s numerous resources, I was able to immerse myself in a fully English environment.” Mia Yeh, a freshman of the EMI program at the Department of Electrical Engineering, said that the high percentage of international students at NSYSU helps her improve her English speaking and listening, and this was her initial reason for choosing NSYSU. A freshman of the EMI program at the Department of Chemistry I-Hung Kuo pointed out that he finds the subsidy for English proficiency exams very attractive and although he has already received the required TOEIC score, the possibility to apply for the subsidy made him consider taking the TOEFL exam to enhance his own competitiveness. Student of the EMI program at the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Chun-Yen Huang said that the EMI level certification adds value to the university diplomas, enhances one’s employability, and comes useful for future R&D and communication with foreign customers.
At present, NSYSU has established 9 Master’s and PhD EMI programs and 3 undergraduate EMI programs (at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, and the Department of Chemistry). By 2030, the University will establish EMI programs at each department and all postgraduate programs will all be taught entirely in English. As a key cultivation school of the “Program on Bilingual Education for Students in College” of the Ministry of Education and with the Regional Resource Center for Bilingual Education established, NSYSU will move towards the goal of internationalization and become a top international bilingual university.
