New internship program to cultivate future specialists of offshore wind power generation

(Provided by Department of Marine Environment and Engineering) As the offshore wind power generation industry is starting to grow, it is in need of resources and so, with the assistance of Metal Industries Research & Development Centre, National Sun Yat-sen University has cooperated for the first time with the team of the Hai Long Offshore Wind Farm Project on an internship program. An elaborate orientation session and subsequent rigorous evaluation of interns gave the students and faculty the opportunity to participate in the sector affairs and inject fresh blood in it.
Hai Long Offshore Wind Farm Project in Changhwa City has three separate grid allocations: phase 2a (300 MW), 2b (232 MW), and 3 (512 MW), jointly developed by Canada’s Northland Power, Singapore’s Yushan Energy, and Japan’s Mitsui & Co. The wind farm has a total capacity of 1,044 MW and is expected to generate electricity for over one million households upon completion between 2025 and 2026.
With the assistance of Metal Industries Research & Development Centre, NSYSU, together with Hai Long Offshore Wind Farm Project, provided summer internship opportunities in wind farm development for two recruited students: I-Chieh Chien, a senior of the Department of Marine Environment and Engineering (DMEE) and Cheng-Ho Chang, a junior of the same Department. Cheng-Ho Chang said that during the internship he was deeply inspired and gained a lot of knowledge in engineering and industry practice from the Hai Long team, who gave him advice and feedback on the projects he was responsible for; communicating with the team and learning made him grow in a very short time. I-Chieh Chien, who was an assistant coordinator in the engineering team, said that during her internship, she could make use of what she had learned in project practice and enhance her professional communication skills. She gathered information from various sources in a very short time, and then integrated and summarized information from contractors and government agencies before passing it to the team members in charge; there were many external influencing factors in the early stage of project development, and dealing with various sudden situations such as weather conditions and making the follow-up work go smoothly were also valuable practical skills she learned during her internship.
In response to the internship program, Chairman of DMEE at NSYSU, Professor Shiahn-Wern Shyue, said that the DMEE has established the Master's Program in Offshore Wind Power and Maritime Engineering two years ago; it was the first Master’s program in offshore wind power generation at a national research university in Taiwan. This year, two outstanding students from DMEE had the honor to participate in this first international-level summer internship. He believes that Taiwan can establish a system for cultivation and development of offshore wind power talents.
Executive Vice President at Hai Long Offshore Wind Project Jun Tamura expressed his gratitude to the Metal Industries R&D Center for facilitating this opportunity and said that it was the first summer internship program at Hai Long. He felt honored to collaborate with NSYSU and although the internship was shortened due to the epidemic, the two NSYSU students were not limited by the time factor, would ask questions and take on a pro-active attitude in helping the engineering team launch the project, as well as joining managers’ conferences multiple times, demonstrating a great performance. At present, Taiwan is in urgent need of wind power generation specialists. He expressed his hopes that more young students will participate in the Hai Long Internship Program and join the offshore wind power industry to strive for environmental sustainability. In the future, Taiwan is expected to serve as a talent pool for offshore wind power in the Asia-Pacific region.
Metal Industries Research & Development Centre actively promotes the training of professionals of offshore wind power generation in Taiwan and strives to bridge the academia with the industry. In addition to being commissioned by the Bureau of Energy to operate the Maritime Technology Innovation Centre, the Metal Industries Research & Development Centre has also visited the campus to hold thematic seminars and launch internship programs, matching the industry with the academia. Metal Industries R&D Center became a finalist in two categories: Training Team of the Year 2021: Newcomer and Training Team of the Year 2021: Asia/Pacific by the Global Wind Organisation (GWO). The Center has completed many industry-academia cooperation projects in offshore wind power generation and has been steadily investing in training for the domestic industry development. The Maritime Technology Innovation Centre plans for the interns to participate in the Energy Taiwan activities, and arranges several seminars with experts and on-site visits to operation and maintenance sites so that the interns can continue to maintain their connection with the industry and join the booming wind power industry right after graduation. In the future, internship programs at the Maritime Technology Innovation Centre will be continued in the following years, hoping to attract more students interested in offshore wind power generation and become specialists in this sector.
