NSYSU international students to create English language environment in elementary and middle schools

National Sun Yat-sen University trains international students to become English-language teaching assistants (ELTAs) and help create an English-language environment in elementary and middle schools. In the first year, the program includes 4 hours of English teaching per week for 12 weeks in 15 elementary and middle schools in Kaohsiung, creating a lively English-language environment on campus and enhancing students' opportunities and ability to use English for communication.
In line with the Blueprint for Developing Taiwan into a Bilingual Nation by 2030, NSYSU has established the ELTA Education Resource Center (Southern Region) to implement the English Language Teaching Assistant (ELTA) Program, which combines the resources of the Southern Regional Resource Center for Bilingual Education and the Fulbright Taiwan Foundation for Scholarly Exchange to provide training courses in English teaching and train international ELTAs.
Under the leadership of Director Hsueh-Hua Chuang of NSYSU Institute of Education, the ELTA program has a systemic training plan, develops curriculum modules, builds an ELTA website and a school entrance mechanism, invites training consultants of Fulbright Taiwan to serve as instructors and combines the energy and resources of the English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Program to develop a rich training curriculum. The program recruits international exchange students, recipients of Huayu Enrichment Scholarship of the Ministry of Education, and international degree students to complete 14 hours of online courses and 4 hours of on-site teaching practice to learn professional knowledge, design course activities for different learning stages, conduct teaching demonstrations, and receive feedback to ensure teaching quality.
NSYSU ELTA Program is integrated with the resources of the Education Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government to provide a comprehensive English teaching resource network, courses, and teachers for bilingual education in Kaohsiung. Currently, 7 students have completed the ELTA training and started teaching English for 4 hours weekly at elementary and middle schools, giving classes integrating their own culture with various topics, such as daily life, campus life, animals and plants. Nohelia from Peru gave a class on the daily life in Peru, the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu, the colorful Rainbow Mountain, and talked about how Peruvians use food to describe people or moods: for example, pineapples symbolize bad luck and carrots – innocence. Ksenia gave a lesson about Ukrainian dumplings. With the learning sheet, the pupils could think about the ingredients of dumplings and learn the English vocabulary for different foods. The courses are taught in English in an interactive way to foster the interest and motivation of elementary and middle school pupils in learning English and remove their anxiety about learning English.
The elementary and middle school teachers were impressed with the content of the activities designed by international ELTAs, especially the cultural activities that incorporated their own background, which was a new experience for both the teachers and students. Some of the elementary and middle school teachers said that their students enjoy the lively and dynamic teaching style of ELTA teachers and that they look forward to each English class. In addition, elementary and middle school teachers said that they believe that this was an invaluable opportunity for Taiwanese pupils to use English and enrich cross-cultural communication experience.
In the future, NSYSU will steadily recruit participants for the ELTA Program and plans to organize training courses every two months for 5 to 10 students. In one year, it is planned to match them up with 15 elementary and middle schools and provide quality English language teaching activities to help elementary and middle schools create an English-language learning environment.
