NSYSU scholarship for Slovakian students to nurture high-tech talents

2021-12-21

Recently, Slovakia's Deputy Minister of Economy Karol Galek led a delegation to Taiwan and attended the Investment and Enterprise Exchange Seminar in Kaohsiung. As NSYSU has two sister universities in Slovakia, Vice President for International Affairs Dr. Chih-Wen Kuo was invited to meet the delegation. At the Seminar, Dr. Kuo announced scholarships for students from Comenius University in Bratislava and Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava for doctoral studies at NSYSU. The scholarships include tuition waivers and monthly stipends of NTD 15,000.

"NSYSU established partnerships with Slovak universities as early as 14 years ago, and NSYSU and Comenius University in Bratislava have exchanged around 20 students over the years. It is a good timing for both sides to facilitate exchanges and cooperation," Dr. Kuo points out.

As NSYSU President Dr. Ying-Yao Cheng has promised to grant tuition waivers for 20 students from Lithuania back in November this year, NSYSU is offering yet another scholarship program for exceptional Slovakian students for degree studies. Dr. Kuo emphasized that Slovakia is strong in biotechnology, semiconductors, higher education, and innovative research, and both sides will continue to engage in exchange and talent cultivation.

In October, National Development Council and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs delegation visited Slovakia. This return visit of the Slovakian delegation led by Deputy Economy Minister Karol Galek showed friendship and laid the foundation for future cooperation in industry, talent exchange, and investment. Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-Mai pointed out that Kaohsiung has a logistic advantage: it has a seaport, an international airport, and a solid industrial hub. The city also formed the AIoT International Alliance and established the 5G AIoT Innovation Park with joint efforts of the central and local authorities. Mayor Chen welcomed the delegation to visit Kaohsiung and expressed his hopes for Taiwan-Slovakia relations to flourish and expand on the exchange and cooperation.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Slovak delegation included 18 senior officials from the Slovak Ministry of Economy, Foreign Affairs, Education, Science, Research and Sport, the Innovation and Energy Agency, the Business Council, the Investment and Trade Development Agency, and the Slovak Academy of Sciences, and representatives of 25 outstanding enterprises strongly recommended by the Slovak government with production and R&D potential in space science, biotechnology, and semiconductors.
