IPS discusses past and present of Kaohsiung's Wall Street

2022-02-21

(Provided by Institute of Political Science) The students and teachers of National Sun Yat-sen University Institute of Political Science (IPS) have recently visited Taiwan Academy of Banking and Finance (TABF), where they met the Academy’s executive director and a city councilor devoted long-term to the city’s technological development and discussed the past, present, and future of Kaohsiung’s financial district in Cianjhen, as well as the questions in politicians’ minds and the blind spots in governance.

From the perspective of Kaohsiung's development, Cianjhen District used to be the political and financial center of Kaohsiung. With the city developing towards its north and south ends, did the administrative area that used to be “Kaohsiung's Wall Street” have the opportunity to transform old neighborhoods and introduce innovative financial technology into the area to bring back prosperity? The Director of NSYSU IPS Professor Frank Cheng-Shan Liu, who teaches a course in Social Science Methodology, and councilor I-Cheng Wu engaged in a seminar discussion. In a Q&A session, the students were trained to ask questions with a problem-oriented mindset and identify how politicians develop problem awareness and find relevant solutions.

Councilor I-Cheng Wu said that since he started his political career, he has worked hard to advocate for the improvement of Kaohsiung residents’ livelihood. With the government's current approach to financial technology, regulation and the issuance of a virtual currency, Kaohsiung’s surplus production has the potential to regain its value. Located in the heart of the financial district by the former City Hall, Taiwan Academy of Banking and Finance has been steadily promoting financial education and research to facilitate the modernization of the financial sector. During the discussion, both sides showed their commitment to the rooting of financial technology in Kaohsiung City and expressed their hope to work together with the academic community to nurture talents and complement each other for the smart city of Kaohsiung to further form an e-society.

After the discussion, Director Professor Liu said that the students trained by IPS are not only willing to engage in theoretical research, but also have a concern for public welfare and, together with the teachers, are involved in many issues relevant to people’s lives. Financial development is a part of the IPS curriculum because there is a lot of room for political science students to contribute to the regulation, public demand, resource integration, and the establishment of a platform for the cooperation between the industry, government, and academia.
