Teachers discuss project writing skills for teaching practice research in workshop

(Provided by Teaching and Learning Development and Resources Center) The South Base of MOE (Ministry of Education) Teaching Practice Research Program (TPRP) has recently organized a workshop on writing teaching practice research projects in several fields: general education, humanities, engineering, business management, and technology. The participants shared their experiences in these practical fields during three sessions. The principal investigator of the South Base, NSYSU Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Tong-Yu Hsieh pointed out that, unlike the previous workshops which were conducted in a form of summary, this workshop focused on different disciplines separately, with the aims to allow teachers from different disciplines to interact with each other more in-depth and solve common problems encountered in writing.
Associate Professor Jin-Pei Chen of the Center for General Education at Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages and Associate Professor Hung-Hsiang Wang of the Department of Industrial Design at National Taipei University of Technology shared their experience in the fields of general education and humanities. Associate Professor Jin-Pei Chen mentioned the importance of infographics in general education and said that the project can be greatly enhanced by the clever use of a combination of infographics, maps, and outdoor teaching. Associate Professor Hung-Hsiang Wang concentrated on two principles when writing his project, with the first being grasping current topics in education, current theories, and results, and the second being establishing a research method that can be used to quickly test the effectiveness of improvement. This will not only allow him to complete the plan decisively and quickly but also to solve some important teaching problems in the classroom and achieve a positive cycle.
Professor Hsing-Lung (Sam) Lien of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the National University of Kaohsiung and Associate Professor Tsau-Bin Chen of the Department of International Business at Shih Chien University were in charge of the discussion on the disciplines of engineering and business management. Professor Lien believes that when writing projects in the engineering field, one can start by improving the way of conducting laboratory classes as well as applying proper teaching methods, such as project-based learning, flipped classroom, collaborative learning, design thinking, etc. Professor Chen advised to first study education theory before writing one’s project to observe and understand the students’ learning situation and come up with questions.
For the technology practice and engineering, the South Base invited two speakers: Associate Professor Jeng-Dao Lee of the Department of Automation Engineering at the National Formosa University and Associate Professor Hsiou-Hsuan Wang of the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at National Ilan University. Associate Professor Jeng-Dao Lee shared his writing project skills. He said that research themes and objectives can be used to plan the curriculum in learning by doing through teacher and industry-academia collaboration to develop students' ability to transform what they have learned into practical skills and reduce the gap between education and the job market. Associate Professor Hsiou-Hsuan Wang took the problems often encountered by science and engineering students when learning abstract theories. She pointed out that teachers can become aware of these problems by solving the problem of students' distraction and learning anxiety in class and using different teaching methods to solve different learning problems.
