As the crisis in Ukraine escalates, Ukrainian students in Taiwan are concerned about their families back home. NSYSU Vice President for International Affairs Dr. Chih-Wen Kuo, in an interview with off-campus media, said that three students from Ukraine pursue a degree at NSYSU. He said that if they encounter problems because of the persisting war, they can apply for emergency relief support to continue with their studies. If the war continues to the next semester and the students find themselves unable to pay for their tuition fees, the University will organize a crowdfunding campaign to help them continue their studies.

One of the three Ukrainian students at NSYSU is a doctoral student of the Institute of Education married to a Taiwanese. She is very worried about her 42-year-old brother who is already on the battlefield and she talks to her family back home every day through video meeting apps to ask about their situation. Two other students, studying for a master degree, worry about their families’ safety back home as well.

According to the Ministry of Education, there are currently 72 Ukrainian students in Taiwan. This number includes both degree and non-degree students. The Ministry of Education asked each university to provide assistance to the Ukrainian students, help them contact their families back home, and continue their studies.
