Building South Base Network for teaching and practice research: Cross-school Teachers’ Community Project

(Provided by Teaching and Learning Development and Resources Center) NSYSU Teaching and Learning Development and Resources Center and the South Base of the Ministry of Education Teaching Practice Research Program recently organized a cross-school sharing and exchange meeting for the teacher communities. Twenty cross-school teacher communities shared the results of their exchange and nearly 100 participants joined the meeting online. NSYSU Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and the principal investigator of the South Base Project, Tong-Yu Hsieh, said that the cross-school teacher communities are the most important resources for teachers working on their projects for the Teaching Practice Research Program. The teacher communities tried to help each other solve problems encountered in the process in the most direct and personalized way. The South Base will continue to support cross-school teacher communities in the future. The applications for teacher communities supported by the South Base were accepted till March 1, 2022. The project aims at enhancing the teachers’ teaching and research capacity through a more extensive and diversified exchange.
During the meeting, a community convener, Associate Professor Ru-Mei Hsieh of the Program in Interdisciplinary Studies formulated the aim of her community as “Creativity & Innovation to the Nth Power”, saying that the exchange of interdisciplinary and innovative teaching methods can boost innovation in teaching. Professor Hsieh pointed out that entrepreneurship is an issue that has emerged in higher education in the past 20 years, and how to teach entrepreneurship has become a major challenge. She pointed out that the teacher community revolves around three major elements: diversified teaching themes, co-creation, research, and co-development of teaching materials, and connecting with entrepreneurial team counseling. It starts from the quality of innovative teaching exchange and connects teachers' capacity to inject resources into teaching.
Associate Professor Yu-Ting Hung of the Department of Tourism Management at Chia Nan University of Pharmacy and Science, also the convener of the community, believes that the purpose of the cross-school community is to provide different strategies for teachers and stimulate their writing of papers in education. Therefore, they planned 6 community meetings in the form of the world café to maximize the benefits of sharing teaching experiences. Nine teachers in the community presented 6 paper summaries or journal papers, and submitted 7 applications for the 2022 Teaching Practice Research Program.
Another community convener, Associate Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Kun Shan University Li-Hung Lin shared that the expected results of the cross-school teacher communities can be expressed in qualitative and quantitative indicators. Qualitative indicators include the organization of paper study sessions and the formation of resource sharing community groups, while quantitative indicators include the number of submissions and times of community members participating in teachers' workshops at regional bases.
Chin-Ying Chen, an Associate Professor at the Center for General Education at Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology and a community convener divided the 10 teachers of her community into two groups: one with background in education and another one with other backgrounds, so that teachers with expertise in education could support others with expertise in other fields. Chin-Ying Chen also found that data processing and analysis are indispensable for Teaching Practice Research Program, so she planned a series of workshops on questionnaire design and statistical analysis to effectively address teachers’ needs.
The 2022 South Base Cross-school Teacher Community Project was open for application until March 1, 2022 at 12:00 PM and the project period runs from April 1, 2022 to November 30, 2022. The regional base model aims to invite schools in the southern region to form a support network for teachers and a large regional cross-school teacher community, and to enhance teachers' teaching research capacity through more extensive and diversified exchanges.
