New NSYSU campus in Renwu to become a hub of medical studies

Today (November 7th) National Sun Yat-sen University organized a ceremony celebrating the opening of the Renwu Campus for visitors, under the slogan ‘NSYSU and Renwu create a future together'. University President Ying-Yao Cheng said, that from today to the end of January next year, the 24-hectare Renwu Campus will be open for visitors. The Campus is planned to be divided into three areas: one dedicated to AI medicine, one dedicated to smart health, and a recreational area for local residents. The Campus will help fulfill the University’s social responsibility by becoming a hub of medical research and cultivation of professionals in the medical field.

With the participation of legislative committee member Tai-Hua Lin, many local representatives, outstanding NSYSU alumni: CEO of Lung Ching Steel Enterprise Co. Chin-Nan Hsieh and CEO of Jiu Zhen Nan Foods Eric Lee, NSYSU teachers and students, and local residents, new Renwu Campus of the University was formally opened this morning. University President Ying-Yao Cheng emphasized that NSYSU’s vision is to improve and lessen the disparities in the offer of medical studies between the North and South of Taiwan. The President said that Renwu Campus is planned to house a new College of Medicine including one department and three institutes. Two institutes: the Institute of Precision Medicine and the Institute of Biopharmacy were already approved by the Ministry of Education and are scheduled to start recruiting students in the next academic year. The Department of Post Baccalaureate Medicine and the Institute of Clinical Psychology are still to be inspected by Taiwan Medical Accreditation Council for human resources and curriculum before the review of the Ministry of Education. Successfully established, the College of Medicine will be the first public medical college in the Kaohsiung and Pingtung area, improving the standards of medical education in Greater Kaohsiung and backing the development of the medical industry.

Because of the high proportion of hilly terrain in the Sizihwan Campus, for many years there were plans to establish a second campus in a different location. Having obtained the approval of the Ministry of Defense and the Renwu District Office, the 24-hectare former military area was donated to NSYSU free of charge. The plan was approved by the Ministry of Education in December 2012; environmental impact assessment started in 2015 and was passed in April this year. The University immediately started the first stage of land levelling and today announced the availability of the green corridors of the campus area to the residents and visitors for recreational purposes. The transformation in the medical world of the Kaohsiung and Pingtung area that is about to take place could be sensed today. Second-stage land levelling is scheduled for the beginning of the next year.

The results of research, development and academy-industry collaboration conducted by NSYSU in recent years were reverberating; collaboration agreements were signed with Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Kaohsiung Medical University and six major municipal hospitals, building regional alliances of the University, promoting cross-field R&D in medical technology, and academia-industry collaboration. In the future, the Renwu Campus will become a hub of medical research and cultivation of professionals in the medical field, and expand the excellent scientific research capacity at NSYSU to the fields of precision medicine, biopharmacy, biomedicine, and medical technology.

Today’s ceremony was attended by about 400 guests: NSYSU teachers and students, local residents, and distinguished guests, including: legislative committee member Tai-Hua Lin, Kaohsiung city councilors: Jui-Hung Chiang, Chun-Hsien Chiu, Sheng-Fu Chang, advisor of Metal Industries R&D Center Ying-Chang Shen, commissioner of Kaohsiung City Police Department – Renwu precinct Tung-Shan Liang, Chief Secretary of The Fifth Special Police Corps Chung-Hsien Tai, Chief Secretary of Kaohsiung City Renwu District Office Hui-Chen Chang, outstanding NSYSU alumni: CEO of Lung Ching Steel Enterprise Co.
