During the two days of 2019 Annual Conference of Taiwan Education Research Association, organized by National Sun Yat-sen University, about 200 papers were presented. Nearly 300 participants attended the event. Crossing the educational boundaries was this year’s leading theme. In the fast-changing world of today, boundaries between different disciplines gradually disappear, and the training of interdisciplinary critical thinking skills has become a trend in the world of education; this offers boundless possibilities and is a completely new vision still waiting to be explored.

Ying-Yao Cheng – President of NSYSU, and Director of Taiwan Education Research Association and the Global Association of Chinese Creativity, said that this year National Sun Yat-sen University stepped into its 39th year of activity. Currently, NSYSU is one of the focal points of the Top University Project of the Ministry of Education. The University pursues academic and teaching excellence, and actively works towards the goal of becoming a top institution at an international level.

All speakers at the Conference were outstanding professionals in this research field.
Keynote speeches were delivered by Dr. Wei-Chen Hung – Professor and Department Chair from Northern Illinois University – “Metacognition and STEM Learning: A Glass Box View of Scaffolding Students in Learning from Their Failures and Successes.” And Mon-Chi Lio, Deputy Minister of Education, delivering the talk “Self-cultivation, curriculum and exam recruitment”, explaining the promotion and expectations towards new curricula for 12 years of basic education issued in 2019. Deputy Minister Lio stated that the exam questions should concentrate on the development of core issues, and emphasized practical application of different fields in the overall context. As the possibility of abilities assessment through exam is limited, education practitioners have to face the challenge of some classes not corresponding to the subjects of exams, and the reform and adjustment of the way to prepare exam questions according to the new curricula.

Besides keynote speeches, this year’s conference also included a speech by Dr. Justin Adam Gelzhiser on “International & Comparative Education: A critical mixed methods approach to understanding the American school shooting public health crisis”. The Conference included 4 different panels. The “Future prospects of international education in Taiwan” panel was moderated by Yuan-Lung Chu – Principal of Taoyuan Municipal Dayuan International Senior High School; the following invited speakers: Yung-Shan Hung – Director and Associate Research Fellow, Research Center of Curriculum and Instruction, National Academy for Educational Research, Da-Chiu Wang – Principal of Mingdao High School in Taichung, and teacher Maurice Huang – founder of Wisdom Hall Education (non-government organization) discussed international education in theory, practice and from the perspective of a non-government organization, and debated on how to foster student’s interest in global issues and international mobility from childhood; the students must understand their own identity, connection to the world and be able to look at Taiwan from a global perspective. The topics of other panels were: “Innovation in education and society (1)”, “Innovation in education and society (2)”, “Education forum: dare to be moved by the song of education”. The agenda of the Conference was ample: it included keynote speeches and panels, provided new knowledge and research information, speeches and posters were presented in different forms, discussions were varied and valuable.

In addition, the Institute of Education and the Center for Teacher Education at NSYSU also organized “The alumni coming back to NSYSU” as part of discussion, gathering alumni of any year of graduation in one hall to connect and exchange. This year, Principal of Sih-Wei Primary School Ching-Tsai Weng, teacher of Min Tsu Primary School Ying-Hsien Chao, and lecturer of the National University of Kaohsiung I-Ling Wu were invited to share their personal experiences. Lecturer Wu encouraged junior colleagues to concentrate on their own lives, goals, and to make efforts. He hopes to pass on outstanding achievements of NSYSU alumni by sharing experiences and exchanging opinions.
