Come to the Sizihwan Tunnel for book exhibition! The 5th edition of Southpost Arts Fringe is organized by University Social Responsibility project B – “The city is a museum” by the Ministry of Education and NSYSU Kaohsiung Collaborative Learning Group, while Pray Taiwan, and Faces – common art space are the strategic planners and executives, using Sizihwan Tunnel by NSYSU as base of the festival events. 2019 Southpost Arts Fringe: The Routine lasts two months, from December 28th until February 23rd and offers a book exhibition, writers’ salon, shows and theatre performances.

This edition’s exhibition was produced by Tina Shyh, a graduate of the Master Program in Arts Management at NSYSU Department of Theater Arts, who guided the students to cooperate with on-campus and off-campus teams and create a library dedicated to the island’s literature in the century-old Sizihwan Tunnel, with dreamland as the leading topic. Besides selected texts readings, writers will be invited to the “Salon of the daring” every week to share life stories and creative work with the readers. With young people participating in community activities, getting to know their local environment, creating beauty with the residents, not only can a link between life environment, community and different social groups be established but also the cultural landscape of the community can be revitalized with more fun and adventure that art offers.

The past years unveiled the secrets of the Sizihwan Tunnel, which became a place where culture and art events are constantly sprouting, however, the Tunnel has never hosted a book exhibition until now. “Library”, “books”, “writings” may sound like something boring or stiff. Technology stands in the way – modern people type, take photos, pretend to be someone else or recreate oneself in the virtual reality. As people abandon the habit of reading, it is becoming more and more difficult to make them stop and flick over a book. “Through this book exhibition in the tunnel, we hope to get people to redefine their relationship with books”.

The curatorial team made a long-term plan to use the tunnel as art space and invited Kai-Hsiang Cheng, a sketcher from Pingtung to plan together a special exhibition of images to present works dedicated to Hamasen streetscapes. Thanks to the artist’s unique perspective and drawing style, metal sheet houses, PVC corrugated sheet roofs, crooked illegal extensions to buildings, collage-style facades formed the “Taiwanese aesthetics” of the regular people. As for the theatre program, in February this year a local theatre troupe – Old Boy Theatre will give two performances based on writer I-Hui Hsiao’s “Poetry Theatre” (“詩劇場”).

The axis of the 2019 Southpost Arts Fringe is the everyday life aesthetics, and the local land is the starting point of a genuine approach to the beauty hidden in daily life. Educational institutes have the long-standing habit of reflecting on aesthetics through the lens of fine arts, which is a limited perspective, but hope to try out more diversified viewpoints by using the experimental environment of Southpost Arts Fringe, the community space and experimental theatre where culture and industry coexist to make the artistic creation intertwine with everyday life instead of limiting oneself to art as the core object and action. The NSYSU team tried to put the aesthetic experience into a pure art form.
