Research teams of three organizing committee members of the Institute of BioPharmaceutical Sciences, National Sun Yat-sen University (IBPS, NSYSU): Professors Zhi-Hong Wen, Mel S. Lee and Lie-Fen Shyur were independently awarded the 2019 National Innovation Advancement Award and/or National Innovation Award. These awards are the highest recognition of developments in the fields of biomedicine and health in Taiwan and are granted to corporate entities, academic and clinical research teams for developing innovative solutions and technologies.

Professor Zhi-Hong Wen, Department of Marine Biotechnology and Resources and the organizing committee member of the IBPS, NSYSU was awarded the 2019 National Innovation Advancement Award in recognition of his research team for continuing innovations and advancements in R&D of “The Cultured Formosa Soft Coral for Cosmeceuticals”. Scientific evidence proved that cultured soft coral produces active ingredients which have skincare properties, and can be further applied in cosmeceuticals and pharmaceuticals, and integrated into innovative aquaculture in the tourism and leisure sector in an environmentally sustainable way.

Professor Mel S. Lee, Division of Joint Reconstruction, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, and the organizing committee member of the IBPS, NSYSU was awarded the 2019 National Innovation Advancement Award in recognition of his research team for continuing innovations and advancements in R&D of "EVA" Expandable Vertebral Augment System. This outstanding development allows the performance of innovative minimally invasive surgery on compression fractured vertebra; this is due to the properties of titanium alloys and the innovative geometric structure of the implants of the expandable vertebral support structure and special surgical devices for implanting, which allow the implant to restore the original height of the fractured vertebra. The System can be also applied to avoid the complications of traditional surgery.

Dr. Lie-Fen Shyur, Distinguished Research Fellow of Agricultural Biotechnology Research Center, Academia Sinica, and the organizing committee member of the IBPS, NSYSU was awarded the 2019 National Innovation Advancement Award for continuing innovations and advancements in “Multi-functional Phytoagents for Health Care” from Crassocephalum crepidioides. The novel active principle ingredient (API) from the medicinal plant possesses multiple bioefficacies including prevention of fulminant hepatitis, combating of bacterial septicemia, and skin whitening. The API can be further developed as botanical drugs and cosmetics. Shyur’s research team also discovered Elephantopus scaber plant-derived sesquiterpenoid and its novel derivatives that show multiple pharmacological functions and can be developed into therapeutics or adjuvant for metastatic and/or drug-resistant cancers (breast cancer, melanoma, etc.) treatment. The novel discovery and results made Shyur’s research team win the 16th National Innovation Award (2019).
