Distinguished Professor Chung-Shin Yuan of the Institute of Environmental Engineering, NSYSU, receives the Fellow Award of the Air and Waste Management Association and Lyman A. Ripperton Environmental Educator Award
(Provided by the Institute of Environmental Engineering) Distinguished Professor Chung-Shin Yuan of the Institute of Environmental Engineering, NSYSU, received the 2020 Fellow Award of the Air and Waste Management Association and 2020 Lyman A. Ripperton Environmental Educator Award. He was the first environmental scholar to receive two awards at the same time in the 113-years’ history of the Association.

The Air and Waste Management Association (A&WMA) is a long-standing international organization addressing environmental issues. It has nearly 10,000 members including environmental scientists, policymakers, and environmental engineers from different countries. The scope of the Association covers air pollution control and waste management. The Association played a critical role in the environmental policies in many countries, including the USA. Many of the Administrators of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are the members of the Association.

Professor Yuan joined the Lake Michigan Section of the Association as a student member when he was studying for his doctoral degree at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He actively participated in the academic events of the Association. After returning to Taiwan, he established the Taiwan Section of the Association together with Prof. Chang-Chuan Chan, the Dean of the College of Public Health, National Taiwan University, and became the founding Chair of the Taiwan Section. In the past 30 years, Professor Yuan has organized many delegations of the Taiwan Section to attend the Annual Meetings of the Association. He has served as the Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Committee of the Association and currently serves as the Associate Editor of the Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association (JA&WMA).

Professor Yuan has been teaching at the Institute of Environmental Engineering, NSYSU, for over 30 years, nurturing numerous talents successful in their fields. He has served as the Director-General of Environmental Protection Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government and had an outstanding contribution to the improvement of the air quality of Kaohsiung. In the past years, only one scholar received the Lyman A. Ripperton Environmental Educator Award. This year, the Award was conferred to two scholars: Professor Yuan and Professor Petros Koutrakis from Harvard University.
