Transportation equity: NSYSU supports the operation of the Happiness Bus

(Provided by the College of Social Sciences) Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and Penghu Regional Transportation Development Research Center at National Sun Yat-sen University has been focusing on the problem of insufficient transportation in rural areas for a long time. The Center has managed to persuade Hui Wang, the CEO of Shan Jei Recycling Corporation to finance the Happiness Bus for Laiyi Township and now, the Bus has officially started its operation. This is the fulfillment of the University Social Responsibility and Corporate Social Responsibility, which strengthens the rural public transport and provides convenient transportation services to residents.

The residents have experienced transport deprivation for a long time. For many years, the Center has been addressing the problem of insufficient transportation resources in the rural areas of Pingtung County. The Director of the Center Professor Yu-Kang Lee mentioned that this time the Center has played an important role in the Highway Transportation Promotion Program launched in Laiyi Township, and integrated resources of public and private sectors so that the elderly could seek medical advice and go shopping and the young could attend school. Director Lee asserted that this program can have a positive impact on the society, calling for more enterprises to focus on the problem of transportation equity in the rural areas and declared that the Center will provide assistance in this field.

The Mayor of the Layi Township Ching-Hsing Chuang expressed his gratitude to NSYSU, and his recognition for governmental agencies, including the Directorate General of Highways of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications for their financial support of NTD 1.8 million for the future operation of the Happiness Bus. The Deputy Director Ruey-Ming Li of the Kaohsiung Motor Vehicles Office, Directorate General of Highways, pointed out that the routes planned in the Highway Transportation Promotion Program respond to residents’ needs and greatly improve public transportation in the area. He also hopes that this model of public-private partnership can attract more people with aspirations to invest in the local transportation improvement program and improve the wellbeing of the residents.

The Transportation and Tourism Department of the Pingtung County helped integrate the systems of the iPASS cards with discounts for the elderly and the disabled with the operating system of the Happiness Bus to lower the financial burden of those who commute to medical facilities. What is more, LINE Pay option was also made available, and the Safety Without Distance system was introduced to take care of the safety of the commuting elders. The Deputy Director of the Transportation and Tourism Department of the Pingtung County Kuo-Chun Ni was optimistic about the inauguration of the Happiness Bus and emphasized that in the future, he would continue focusing on the future development of the Laiyi Township and provide timely assistance.
