NSYSU is the only university in Taiwan to enter the QS World University Ranking by Subject: Petroleum Engineering
Quacquarelli Symonds published three new QS World University Rankings by Subject for the disciplines of Geology, Geophysics, and Petroleum Engineering. National Sun Yat-sen University entered the 51-75 rank band for the subject of Petroleum Engineering. NSYSU is the only enlisted domestic university in this Ranking and also, was ranked for this subject for the first time, with the total number of subjects ranked reaching 17. In addition to being one of five universities in Taiwan with the most subjects ranked, NSYSU has made the greatest progress among domestic universities in the past three years.

Director of the Center for Quality Assurance, NSYSU, Shiao-Wei Kuo said that materials science, physics, and chemical engineering are the disciplines with the largest R&D capacity at the University. The Center of Crystal Research and the departments and institutes of chemistry, physics, mechanical engineering, and photonics at NSYSU invest in expanding their research capacity and collaborate with top international universities on research. In the past two years, NSYSU was among five universities in Taiwan with the most subjects ranked; the other universities include National Taiwan University, National Cheng Kung University, National Tsing Hua University, and National Chiao Tung University. In the past three years, NSYSU made the biggest progress among domestic universities, with the number of subjects ranked increasing from 12 to 17, the University’s record number.

In addition, the quality of the University’s academic publications has been steadily improving, and the Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI) continuously rising. Since 2017, the FWCI of the University rose from 0.89 to 1.18, which is the biggest improvement, and the third highest FWCI among universities in Taiwan. NSYSU has the smallest number of faculty and is the youngest institution among the top domestic universities, said NSYSU President Ying-Yao Cheng. He emphasized that the faculty’s academic research output in recent years is remarkable both in terms of quantity and quality. He explained that FWCI is the comparison of the faculty’s research output in the subject field to the research papers in the same category published in the same year. If the FWCI is above 1, it means that the research paper is cited more than the global average for similar publications. In international rankings, the FWCI is implemented in the evaluation of the quality of academic papers.
