NSYSU won Gentleman’s Tripod in Bai Li Cup Case Competition at EMBA Alliance Summit

Nineteen teams of EMBA students of seven universities participated in competitions held at the 2020 EMBA Alliance Summit. National Sun Yat-sen University distinguished itself in three competitions: Business Management Cup Case Study Competition, winning the Best Innovation Award under the Taiwan Group, Bai Li Cup Innovative Business Model Proposal Competition, winning the Enterprise Innovation Award and finally, bringing home the highest honor, “Gentleman’s Tripod” for the victory in a high-pressure contest – Bai Li Cup Case Competition.

EMBA Alliance Summit was initiated in 2007 by 9 universities including National Sun Yat-sen University, National Central University, National Chung Cheng University, National Chung Hsing University, Taiwan University of Science and Technology, National Chiao Tung University, National Cheng Kung University, National Chengchi University, and National Tsing Hua University. The Summit holds case competitions every year. Business elites studying at the participating universities tied friendships, put into play their university’s qualities, and shared their knowledge in business operation and the related management technology while participating in a fair play game and enriching the value of the EMBA platform.

Bai Li Cup Case Competition was the most stimulating. The contestants learned about the case details on the day of the competition and had to analyze the problem, draw up a solution, and produce a logical report under time pressure. Meanwhile, they had to demonstrate excellent teamwork. Students of the first year of the EMBA program at the College of Management, NSYSU, Kuang-Miao Huang, Yung-Hsiao Lin, Teng-Chieh Hsu, Chun-Te Chu, Shih-Feng Lin, Chia-Li Kuo, under the guidance of Professor Chou-Wen Wang of the Department of Finance, formed the team named “Crashing Wave West Bay”, to solve the assigned case – “Haier: Incubating Entrepreneurs in a Chinese Giant”. The team had to draw up a feasible strategy to accelerate the growth of microentrepreneurs of Haier’s five major business platforms. The NSYSU team proposed a success formula for Haier’s microentrepreneurs based on the diamond model. Their meticulous and concrete plan was recognized by the judges and won them the first prize.

As regards Business Management Cup Case Study Competition under the Taiwan Group, the NSYSU team, under the guidance of Professor Hao-Chieh Lin of the Department of Business Administration, was formed by Yu-Ting Chiu and Cheng-Wei Yeh – students of Cross-Strait EMBA, Pei-Min Chiang – student of the IBMBA Program, Li-An Chen, Chia-I Chou, and Pei-I Chen – students of the MBA program. The team worked on the “UCB: Data is the New Drug” case, investigating whether international pharmaceutical manufacturer UCB should incorporate data analysis techniques in the company’s strategy. The team concluded that UCB could effectively draw treatment plans and improve patients’ quality of life by effective analysis of patients’ data. The team placed emphasis on various aspects, including production, sales, human resources, information, finances, and proposed a multi-faceted analysis and an innovative viewpoint design, which won them the Best Innovation Award under the Taiwan Group.

The NSYSU team participating in the Bai Li Cup Innovative Business Model Proposal Competition included students of Asia-Pacific EMBA Group Chia-Fu Kao, Chien-Fan Yin, Chun-Wei Chang, Chia-Hua Chiang, Ku-Yu Chen, and Hsiao-Yun Tseng, under the guidance of Professor Min-Hsin Huang of the Department of Business Management, based on the experiences of the founder of a famous seafood restaurant, proposed a shared kitchen service which aims at providing several critical resources for inexperienced restaurant entrepreneurs, including equipment rental, consultancy, and e-commerce support. This new service includes kitchen facilities and the delivery system, entrepreneurship guidance for every element of the business, physical store development, and marketing. Besides, the proposal also included managing a social media platform for restaurant entrepreneurs to share their experience. All team members integrated their professional background and conducted comprehensive analysis and planning. The proposal thus won them the Enterprise Innovation Award.

The team for the Business Management Cup Case Study Competition included students of the Cross-Strait EMBA program: CEO of Shinsei Agriculture Technology Co., Ltd. Yu-Ting Chiu, Training Specialist in LonHai Co., Ltd. Cheng-Wei Yeh, IBMBA student Pei-Min Chiang, and MBA students Li-An Chen, Chia-I Chou, and Pei-I Chen.

The NSYSU team participating in the Bai Li Cup Innovative Business Model Proposal Competition included students of Asia-Pacific EMBA Group – Attorney in Phalanx Law Chia-Fu Kao, Sales Manager in BELFOR Chien-Fan Yin, Director of Personal Finance Technology Department of HiTRUST Chun-Wei Chang, Head of Special Materials Sales Department of Foxconn Technology Group Chia-Hua Chiang, Brand Marketing Manager in Cloud Gate Dance Studio Ku-Yu Chen, and Accountant in Cigna Taiwan Life Assurance Company Ltd. Hsiao-Yun Tseng.
