Kaohsiung City Government supports establishment of NSYSU College of Medicine

National Sun Yat-sen University is preparing to establish the College of Medicine and balance the severe longstanding disparity in medical education and healthcare resources in the north and south of Taiwan. Mayor of Kaohsiung City Chen Chi-Mai promised to provide full support for the project of establishment of the College of Medicine and its future integration with new AIoT applications (combination of AI and Internet of Things) to jointly cultivate smart healthcare professionals.

President Ying-Yao Cheng and Director of the Alumni Service Center Chi-Cheng Wu visited the Mayor of Kaohsiung City Chen Chi-Mai together with a group of outstanding entrepreneurs and alumni of NSYSU, some of whom work in the medical field; the group included: Dr. Su-Ben Tsao – founder of Dr. Tsao’s Clinic of Plastic Surgery, Chairman of Nan Liu Enterprise Co., Ltd. Dr. Chin-San Huang, President of Brogent Group Chih-Hung Ouyang, Chairman of Lung Ching Steel Enterprise Chin-Nan Hsieh, President of Jiu Zhen Nan Foods Co., Ltd. Eric Lee, President of HWALLY Products Co., Ltd. Ming-Yu Lin, and others. They expressed their full support for the establishment of the Department of Post Baccalaureate Medicine at NSYSU that is to cultivate public-financed medical professionals and international medical researchers to serve in outer islands, rural and indigenous areas, and to balance out the disparity in the availability of healthcare resources between the north and south of Taiwan, and to enhance the healthcare service in rural areas.

NSYSU plans to build a hub for medical studies and research in the Renwu Campus, thanks to the financial support of its alumni. Mayor Chen said that he asked Deputy Mayor Charles Lin and Chin-Fu Yang – the Director-General of the Urban Development Bureau, Kaohsiung City Government, to provide assistance in the development of the Renwu Campus to nurture smart healthcare professionals for Taiwan.

“Distance healthcare, economic healthcare, good healthcare ecosystem, precision and preventive medicine are four major shifts in healthcare in the era of artificial intelligence!”, emphasized President Cheng. He said that NSYSU has already obtained the approval of the Ministry of Education to establish the Institute of Precision Medicine and the Institute of Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Research. There are also related biomedical expertise faculty members including the Institute of Medical Science Technology, the Institute of Biomedical Science, and the Department of Biological Sciences, that research performance is among the 1% most acknowledged globally. The team of the Department of Electrical Engineering developed the Self-Injection-Locked Radar, 100 times more sensitive than the traditional radar and combined it with infrared thermal image technology to develop contactless biological sensing system to timely monitor patients’ heartbeat, respiration and body temperature. It can be applied in cloud health management, and care systems for the elderly and infants. Besides, NSYSU also used the AI technology for interdisciplinary research to develop tongue diagnosis system for Chinese medical diagnosis, used in Chinese medicine departments in first-level teaching hospitals in the whole Taiwan; biomedical sensing chips, medical image analysis, smart assistive devices and the VR platform for treatment development are all advantages of the Department of Post-Baccalaureate Medicine.

President Cheng added that the University has library resources and valuable equipment for medicine, biochemistry, biomedical materials, and has an extensive research capacity in PM 2.5 environmental medicine, drug development, food safety and toxicological rapid screening, smart assistive devices, VR platform for treatment development, biomedical sensing chips, medical image analysis and computation, biological sensing and data analysis, animal models for human diseases, marine biomedicine, expressive art therapy, auxiliary application of music therapy in elderly care, and cultivation of top health care management professionals. The strong support of Kaohsiung City Government will enable NSYSU to fulfill its social responsibility and strive to improve the quality of healthcare and citizens’ welfare in the Kaohsiung, Penghu, and Taitung areas.
