NSYSU team develops multi-functional smart window film and wins MOEA Business Startup Award

The Ministry of Economic Affairs organized an award ceremony to confer Business Startup Awards, Taiwan SMEs Innovation Awards, and Rising Star Awards. The team of students and teachers of the Liquid Crystal Photonics Laboratory at the Department of Photonics, NSYSU, established a start-up company – Brilliant Optronics, and were recognized with the Business Startup Award for the Best New Startup. Professor Tsung-Hsien Lin of the Department of Photonics said that the team succeeded in developing a multi-functional smart window film that lets the user adjust light permeation and has several functions: basic transparent, window tint – with insulation and sunlight permeation adjustment, and privacy mode.

The Business Startup Award of the Ministry of Economic Affairs is the only national award for startups in Taiwan established in the past 5 years that developed a new, innovative product for the global market this year. After four months of rigorous scrutiny, MOEA conferred awards of a total sum of 2.4 million NTD to 16 startups. The achievements of academic research not only can be displayed on stage, but also let the students put in play their abilities and create a positive cycle of resources, talents, and technologies connecting. Senior Vice President of the University I-Yu Huang said that Brilliant Optronics has granted the technology license of the multi-functional smart window film and transparent display to Professor Tsung-Hsien Lin of the Department of Photonics, and obtained the University’s investment of nearly 10 million NTD for start-up funds to develop the multi-functional smart window film that can be cut to any size and applied on any type of window glass and be used in 4 modes: basic transparent, window tint, privacy protection, and image display. This successful example of technology transfer solves the current challenges in the window industry: the single function of windows and the high cost of glass replacement.

The multi-functional smart window film can have various applications. For example, in vehicles, the window film can be switched to insulation mode during the day to block heat and sunlight; during the evening, it can be switched to transparent mode to provide a clear field of view. In buildings, users can adjust the light permeation and during the evening, the window film can be switched to privacy mode. The multi-functional smart window can be paired with projection equipment and offer high-definition image quality, and enhance AR user experience.

The chief technology officer of the Brilliant Optronics team, Heng-Yi Tseng emphasized that the team is now focusing on prospective liquid crystal technologies that can be applied in smart windows and transparent displays. He thanked the MOEA for the acknowledgment for the team’s startup which he sees as a motivation to keep on striving and to face the challenges of the future. Cheng-Chang Li, the CEO and one of the founders of Brilliant Optronics said that there are many difficulties to overcome in a technological start-up and that it is quite seldom to start as an academic start-up; he thanked the University for the support and resources shared with the team, thanks to which they could proceed with technology development without worries.

The team of the Department of Photonics established Brilliant Optronics in 2017 and have received several national-level awards, including Entrepreneurship Excellence Award of the Ministry of Science and Technology, LITEON Award, and the Best Invention Award of I-Zone National Innovation Competition.
