2021-03-03

(Report by student journalist) Make your post-graduate degree more valuable and enhance your employability! NSYSU’s Institute of Political Science (IPS), together with the Department of Information Management (DIM) and the Institute of Marketing Communication (IMC), has launched the microprogram in Big Data Analyses for Decoding Economic and Political World, basing on data science and social observations. Director of the Institute of Political Science Professor Frank Cheng-Shan Liu, one of the program instructors, said that in recent years, text mining and polling analysis have developed rapidly and students of the microprogram can learn analysis techniques to decipher social phenomena.

“In the era of data, the ability to interpret data, or what I called turning big data into thick data, is an asset,” said Professor Liu. He pointed out that by combining good story-telling abilities with data analysis, social and management science specialists can enhance their professional competitiveness. He mentioned that one of his former students who took his course on Introduction to Data Analysis Methods and the course on Politics and Information taught by Distinguished Professor Da-Chi Liao from the IPS – the initiator and supervisor of the microprogram, was offered a position of a marketing specialist in a renowned software company. That graduate played a central role in the team thanks to the ability to analyze data provided by data engineers and coordinate different roles.

Dean of the College of Management and Professor of the Department of Information Management San-Yih Hwang teaches the Social Media Analysis course as part of the microprogram. Professor Hwang said that learning about the functions of social media can help students analyze netizens’ opinions on public policies concerning such topics as the recent issue of ractopamine-laden pork imports and observe whether the public’s attitude towards the policy is positive or negative, and try to understand the underlying reasons behind negative attitudes and how the opinions on the issue differ between people in various regions. He said that the course will use in-depth techniques and advised the students to learn basic programming skills and the R language before taking this course to develop more sophisticated research skills.

Assistant Professor Yue Tan of the IMC teaches the course on Digital Content Analysis and Social Network Analysis. She said that the content analysis method in R language is a distinctive research method in communication studies; it allows the classification and quantification of different media articles and analysis of their features: the frequency of words used, sentiment, keywords, and machine learning. What is more, the social network analysis method allows determining the relation between words. Professor Tan welcomed students interested in media analysis to take her course.

The Big Data Analyses for Decoding Economic and Political World microprogram will be open for registration starting from the second semester of the academic year 2020-2021. Students who earn 9 or more credits from the microprogram will have relevant information recorded on their degree diploma.
