NSYSU EMBA wins Gentleman's Tripod again in EMBA Alliance Summit

2021-08-09

The 2021 EMBA Alliance Summit, jointly hosted by National Sun Yat-sen University and National Chung Hsing University, was again a complete success for the NSYSU team, who brought home the highest honor of the Summit – the Gentleman's Tripod. They also won first prize in the Alliance Cup Innovative Business Model Proposal Competition, first prize in the Alliance Cup Case Competition (International Group), second prize in the Business Management Cup Case Competition (Cross-Program Group), and the Best Innovation Award in the Alliance Cup Case Competition (Chunghwa Group).

The team competing in the Alliance Cup Case Competition (International Group) comprised EMBA students from the class of 2022: Hsiu-Ching Chen, Chung-Yu Wu, Hui-Chun Tsai, Po-Lun Chu, Ming-Chen Chien, and Pai-Lu Hsieh. They analyzed the case “Cloud Wars Go Global: How Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Alibaba Compete in Web Services”, exploring the present state of the global industry of cloud services. They submitted a meticulous and concrete global strategic plan to enhance the service and cooperation with other companies, which won them the highest honor of the Summit – the Gentleman's Tripod.

The team competing in the Business Management Cup Case Competition (Cross-Program Group), guided by Associate Professor An-Shou Cheng, included a student from the Cross-strait EMBA (CSEMBA) class of 2020, Si-Kai Wei; EMBA students from the class of 2022, Wen-Chien Chien and Ching-Huang Lin; and students from the Institute of Marketing Communications (IMC), Ping-Yu Tsai, Chang-Cheng Tu, and Chun-Han Yang. The team’s case was “Jan Swartz Steering: Princess Cruises through the COVID-19 Crisis”. They discussed the difficulties encountered by Carnival Corporation and Princess Cruises during the pandemic, analyzed their financial situation, and conceptualized solutions for three stages: survival seeking, preparation stage, and restoration of cruises. This included increasing sources of income and economizing on expenditures, proposing anti-epidemic measures, upgrading and strengthening the OCEAN system, developing partnerships with other sectors, opening new markets, and finding innovative ways of making profit. Their multi-lateral analysis and innovative concepts won them the second prize.

The Alliance Cup Innovative Business Model Proposal Competition focused on the power of knowledge and digitalization in enhancing corporate factors, as well as practice and brainstorming for innovative concepts in business cases. Six students from the Asia-Pacific EMBA Program represented NSYSU in this Competition: Hung-An Chen, Chih-Wei Chiang, Po-Yuan Chang, Cheng Tang, Ting-Ting Chang, and Tung-Mei Pan. The team was guided by Associate Professor of the Institute of Public Affairs Management Wei-Ning Wu. The team members, inspired by smart biomineral mines, addressed the problems faced by Taiwan's diary industry, which often suffers damage due to animal diseases. Their proposal on smart farming systems aimed to help cheese farmers solve problems with their expertise and thus achieve a win-win situation for the company, cheese farmers, the government, and financial institutions, and fulfill their corporate social responsibility (CSR). The team won the first prize due to their innovative thinking and original ideas.

The contestants of the Alliance Cup Case Competition were put to a high-pressure test, as the case details were only disclosed on the day of the competition and so the students had to come up with a case analysis in a limited amount of time, demonstrate good teamwork, and propose a logical solution. For this competition (which NSYSU won last year), the University delegated two teams guided by Professor Chou-Wen Wang of the Department of Finance for both the Chunghwa Group and the International Group. The Chunghwa Group team included the EMBA class of 2022 students Chung-Hsuan Li, Yen-Shuo Chen, Li-Wei Liu, Cheng-Wei Kuo, Chia-Lin Liu, and Chia-Wei Chen, who submitted the proposal “Zoom: a Beautiful New World” for the “Zoom Video Communications: Eric Yuan's Leadership During COVID-19” case. The team won the Best Innovation Award for their comprehensive and feasible strategy for maintaining the growth of Zoom in the post-epidemic era: third-party software redevelopment, with short-, medium-, and long-term planning and sustainable corporate management.

The EMBA Alliance Summit was initiated in 2007 by nine universities: National Sun Yat-sen University, National Central University, National Chung Cheng University, National Chung Hsing University, Taiwan University of Science and Technology, National Chiao Tung University, National Cheng Kung University, National Chengchi University, and National Tsing Hua University. Because of the epidemic, this year’s edition was held online for the first time. EMBA Alliance Summit is the most important competition held among EMBA programs at top universities in Taiwan. EMBA Alliance promotes friendship and fair competition between the business management departments of top universities and excellence in industry-academia cooperation to connect with Chinese-ethnicity management throughout the world, share knowledge and technologies for corporate management, and increase the value of the EMBA platform by putting into play the features of each university.

NSYSU was the biggest winner of this year’s edition, bringing home two first prizes, one second prize, and the Best Innovation Award. The event is expected to encourage other students to take part in future editions of the competition and help them expand their views on business management and pass on the ideas of the College of Management and the spirit of this award to the next generation.
