(Provided by Artificial Intelligence Research and Promotion Center) The Artificial Intelligence Research and Promotion Center (AI Center) at National Sun Yat-sen University and China Steel Corporation joined hands to organize a nationwide AI competition: China Steel AI Challenge – Character Recognition. The theme of the competition is the smart management of steel billets. AI specialists from all over Taiwan are invited to compete for awards of a total value of NTD 320,000. The results presentation, announcement of the winners, and the award ceremony of the competition are scheduled for November 27.

The theme of China Steel AI Challenge – Character Recognition is closely related to the smart management of steel billets. The participants are asked to use AI algorithms and develop a serial number recognition system for the production line to automatically recognize printed or handwritten serial numbers on steel billets. China Steel AI Challenge will confer the first, second, and third prizes, two honorable mentions, and NSYSU Jury Awards to recognize participants’ creativity in solving problems and delivering reports.

Director of NSYSU AI Center, Professor Yun-Nan Chang said that the Center integrates the University’s AI-related research and experience in education and industry-academia cooperation and connects AI research with the industry. In recent years, NSYSU and China Steel Corporation have been intensively cooperating in research and development related to AI. Professor Chang mentioned that this time, the jointly organized China Steel AI Challenge will award special Jury Awards to reward outstanding participants and let the public learn more about the application of AI in the industry, so as to attract more talents to invest and enhance the competitiveness of the industry.

China Steel Corporation said that to enhance the competitiveness of the industry and build a smart system for production and sales in the steel industry, China Steel has proposed hundreds of smart projects for its plants since 2019, systematically pooled resources, and started cooperating with Industrial Technology Research Institute, NSYSU, and National Cheng Kung University. In 2020, it launched the first smart center for blast furnace ironmaking (高爐煉鐵智慧中心), incorporating one-stop monitoring data from the blast furnace, coking and sintering plants, as well as a number of smart modules to monitor the production process using AI, achieving a milestone in the smartification of the production line. This year coincides with the 50th anniversary of China Steel Corporation; the competition aims at helping the industry accelerate and making use of the competitiveness of AI, as well as attracting future AI professionals to join and bring profits to the steel industry and benefit the economy of Taiwan.

The registration for China Steel AI Challenge – Character Recognition is open from September 13 to October 3. The competition will be held from October 4 to November 9, and the awardees will be announced on November 27.
