Forum on Theatre Arts and Gender Culture to follow performance of NSYSU’s annual play

2021-11-01

(Provided by Department of Theater Arts) The annual play of the Department of Theater Arts (DTA) at NSYSU, “The Breasts of Tiresias – Taiwan Remix ‘21”, will be staged in November and be followed by the Forum on Theatre Arts and Gender Culture. Taking the performance review as the starting point, the DTA hopes to invite participants to debate on the issues and changing features Taiwanese theater and gender culture in different times and places.

The annual play by DTA – “The Breasts of Tiresias – Taiwan Remix ‘21” to be staged on November 6 and 7, is based on “The Breasts of Tiresias”, a surrealist and dadaist work by a French playwright. It not only breaks the traditional conventions in the stage, sound design, real-time projection, and costumes. The play is a reflection on gender consciousness in Taiwan after the legalization of same-sex marriage and the start of a critical discourse on the contemporary situation in Taiwan.

On November 8, the Forum on Theatre Arts and Gender Culture will be held in the Co-Learning Space of the College of Liberal Arts on the 8th floor of the Fine Arts Building at NSYSU. The Forum will be an extension of the program and an opportunity to discuss recent gender issues in Taiwan and viewpoints of various theaters on gender interpretation. It will include sessions on the "Modern Theater and Gender Culture", "Gender and Acting", and "Contemporary Opera and Gender Culture", as well as a comprehensive seminar on “The Breasts of Tiresias – Taiwan Remix ‘21”. The Forum invited veteran Taiwanese playwrights to debate together: Associate Professor of the Graduate Institute of Children's Literature at National Taitung University Yu-Hui Wang, Chair Professor of the Department of Theatre Arts at National Taiwan University and Artistic Director of GuoGuang Opera An-Chi Wang, Distinguished Professor of the Department of English at National Central University Hui-Ling Chou, Associate Professor of the Department of Chinese Literature at NSYSU Chih-Ying Lin, Professor at National Kaohsiung Normal University Mali Wu, Associate Professor of the Department of Chinese Literature at National Cheng Kung University Chia-Luan Chin, Director of the Institute of Philosophy at NSYSU Wan-I Yang, a veteran playwright Yu-Hui Fu, Assistant Professor Hsueh-Chun Chao of the Department of Chinese Literature at National Taipei University, President of the International Association of Theatre Critics (Taiwan) Sih-Fong Wu, as well as students and teachers.
